The end of my home networking nightmare. February 28, 2006 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
It's true. After months of trying to get a wireless network operational in my house using different routers and boosters, I've given up and tried the MicroLink dLAN Highspeed Starter Kit. The box blurb says "One Minute Installation" and "Easy Home Networking". For once it's not lying. This kit is really easy to setup and use and it's allowing my son at the other end of the house to use the internet. I just wish I'd bought this before trying wireless!
Stands above all other homeplug implementations. June 29, 2006 R. Andrews (Sheffield, UK) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
The devolo homeplug kit stands way above those offerings by Zyxel, Netgear, etc. Firstly, not every user runs Windows. The driver CD (and website) both featured setup tools for Linux and MacOS X. The quoted install time of 1 minute is a bit overenthusiastic though - you would be hard pushed to have the software installed in that time! Secondly, other manufacturers have produced homeplug devices that have cables to run the devices away from a plug socket, producing unnecessary wire clutter. These just plug straight into the socket. No trailing cables other than the ethernet cable. Let's face it, if you're using a computer, the chances are you're going to be near a plug socket anyway. Thirdly, if you're worried about privacy or snoopers: Don't. The range is 200 metres across a single phase, and these neat little units feature encryption based on a key you set in the setup tool. The gold standard of homeplug devices. Get rid of those trailing cables!
Absolutely fabulous December 6, 2005 T. Gray 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have had no end of headaches trying to reliably use a wireless network in my house (brick/concrete walls). Even the new MIMO wireless kit gave poor coverage. The devolo kit just worked first time. Now I have network access in even the most remote rooms of the house. Speed with the Highspeed version is excellent - no trouble streaming video. Also, even though the documentation warns you not to use surge protectors, I have found that (while the speed drops to about 30Mbs), it works perfectly - I'm not recommending that you do it but it worked for me. If you need troublefree networking and wireless just isn't working for you, this is highly recommended.
Money well spent April 3, 2006 Bob Singleton (West Molesey, Surrey) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
From signing for the package to surfing the 'net took about 5 minutes! It's that quick and simple.Previously I was using a wireless connection which was very much hit and miss depending which room I was in. The router was in the sitting room (middle floor of a three storey town house) and in that room and my "office" on the floor above (and directly over the router), the wireless signal was good. Elsewhere is went from poor to no signal at all. Now with this kit, I can still move around the house with my laptop if I want to and I get a prefect connection every time. The house was recently re-wired, and even having different circuit loops going into the consumer unit doesn't seem to have affected my internet connection. I've also tried plugging in direct to a socket as well as via a surge protector, with only a small drop in connectivity using the latter... certainly not enough to make a difference to my internet surfing. A highly recommended bit of kit.
It just worked January 4, 2006 M. W. Hall (Guildford, UK) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
After months of struggling with (and swearing at) wireless equipment that will only make connections with computers in the room below when the router is on the floor and refuses to talk to equipment across the landing, I have found the solution. More importantly, it doesn't involve multiple aerials, exotic reflectors or additional access points. I plugged the adaptors in, ran the software and made a connection immediately. It was just that simple. The reported speed is 56 meg, faster than my wireless and the adaptors are plugged into ordinary 4 plug strips, not straight into the wall. Fast enough and convenient enough for me. I'm very pleased.
