Access to your files anywhere in the world!!! May 16, 2007 Mr. D. Flynn (London) 21 out of 25 found this review helpful
This is a great product as long as you buy it for the right reasons. If you want extra storage on a single PC this is not for you. If, like me, you already have enough space but want to access your files remotely, without reducing security levels, this is the product for you. I have all My Pictures, Videos, MP3's docs etc etc on this device synched from my PC. (there is over 120 GB of MP3 alone - all copied in one go without a single error...). I can now access these from anywhere - including from work behind a proxy. You can also attach another external USB drive into this device and access the drive the same way with the software without making any changes to the USB disk. If your on the local network it plays videos over wireless without any problems. This is certainly not the fastest way to attach storage to a PC but its designed for its network functionality. If you just want transfer rates to copy files to storage buy the pro version. The software is great - it stops you having to reduce security levels and even lets you access the drives of other machines on the network if you setup the option/connfigure the software on each PC. NOTE: You can still access the drive from anywhere after the 30 day trial. The trial adds anywhere access to your computers internal drives!! I wish people would check before rubbishing software... The questions is - do you have data you would like to access without having to carry around one or more USB sticks and constantly having to update them? If the answer is Yes then this is the option for you. NOTE: Remember if you access large files remotely it's only as fast as the internet connection.
Does what it says on the tin October 21, 2007 Mr. T. Anderson (London, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After installing the drive I installed the Mionet software, the drive didn't appear as a mapped drive in Windows so I mailed the helpline...they were rubbish! Realised after a while that the drive is listed under My Network Places so just mapped a spare drive letter in Windows to it. Uninstalled the Mionet software (you don't need it). Not had a problem since and it's been running pretty much non-stop for 6 months. Drive is formatted as NTFS. I use it to stream movies and music to my laptop and x-box (use an SMB share path). It is connected directly to my router which I connect to wirelessly. I've just filled my first so am about to buy another. I would definitely recommend this product!
For all the people that say it is slow... December 17, 2008 Mr. A. Clarke (Wiltshire, UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are not using a gigabit ethernet (a gigabit router/switch (included in your modem, if not using standalone), gigabit ethernet ports in your pc and cat5e lan cables) you are not going to get gigabit speeds. With all of the above you get between 100-125mbps (Gigabit ~ 1000mbs / 8 = 125 mbps). I do anyway. Stop complaining about speed until you know you have all these and have it set up properly. Don't even think about getting gigabit speeds across a wireless lan!!
Slow but a good storage device March 5, 2008 J. Stirzaker (London, UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've read a few of the reviews for this device and most of them are bagging it. Several things i agree with although just wanted to add some things. If you are after a networked storage device for your music, photos and videos to sit on your home network, with a lot of storage at a cheap price, then this is quite good. If you are after speed and external access, this probably isn't for you. Although the external access would be limited by the bottleneck of your ADSL UL & DL bandwidth. I haven't installed the bundled software and have instead just connected via a browser/file explorer. It was easy to connect to and map as a network drive. Maximum transfer speed for this device is about 40Mbps or 5MBps, which on a 100mbps network isn't too bad. Wouldn't be so great on a 1Gbps network though. WD have acknowledged that this is limited to the onboard CPU, not the drive or network. Hopefully future devices will fix this. Also sadly the USB port on the rear can't be used to transfer files from an external harddrive to the device. It is useful though as a way to extend the capacity. For the interim this will suit me fine, and I will look to upgrade once I manage to fill it up in a year or so's time. The price was great, and made it worth it.
Simple Network Attached Storage December 29, 2007 J. A. Court (Poole, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was after a simple approach to add a network drive that could be accessed (by my SONOS music system) without the need for my PC to be powered on. The WD World Book does the job. I run VISTA and installation was simple, plugged in, assigned a drive letter, away you ago, everything on my wireless network could see the WD drive. I never wanted to 'remotely' access my NAS storage from anywhere in the world so the fact that the MIONET does not work with VISTA was never an issue. The drive isn't the fastest but is more than adequate for my purposes, I also use it to make automatic backups of 3 PC's on a wireless network using LIVE ONE CARE. If you are after a NAS storage device then this is one device you should consider.
