Really good for my MacBook and iTunes November 14, 2007 Mr. S. Downham (Hampshire, UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've been really impressed with my LinkStation Live so far - I bought it specifially for my MacBook, to use to host my iTunes folder so that I did not clog up my internal HD. So far, it has worked a treat - setup was quick and easy using the quick start and included CD. Once installed, I opened up iTunes, told it that I wanted to move my iTunes folder to the 'share' the LinkStation had setup, and away I went! I've not tried exporting my whole library - rather I am building a new iTunes library on the LinkStation, and so far its performed faultlessly. The LinkStation shows up iTunes, and access times over my wireless network for playing songs and small Quicktime files is instant. I use Connect 360 to connect my Xbox 360 to my MacBook, and the 360 spotted my music files (hosted on the LinkStation) just as if they were in a local drive, so music streaming to the 360 is working well. Some people have criticised the noise of the unit - not sure whether this is something that has improved since release, but mine (purchased Nov 07) is pretty quiet - the fan is subtle, and although I can head the disk writing, its not too loud, and only audible when keeping the drive busy. Overall I'd recommend the LinkStation Live highly - its achieved what I wanted from it - to keep my MacBook HD clear of iTunes clutter!
It just worked January 20, 2008 R. Southworth 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Read some mixed reviews. Bought the LinkStation to replace a Linksys NSLU2 as it runs like a dog. This LinkStation is far superior. I get 10 megabytes per second transfer speed on a wired connection on a 10/100 network, and will maybe upgrade my network card and get a new switch to take advantage of the quicker speeds the LinkStation offers. I gave up some time ago on usng wireless G to cope with sending gigabytes of data anywhere. After driver installation, the print server via USB just worked, which is amazing (these things tend to be just one way, so data is sent to it for printing, but ink levels etc. can not be sent back). The initial setup of the NAS just worked as well, after setting a fixed IP address. I didn't install any of the software, just configured it via the web browser, which is very well laid out, and sluggish but nowhere near as bad as the NSLU2 interface. The ability to add another USB drive as well as a printer via the two USB ports is fantastic. The share name of the USB drive cannot be changed, but that's not that big a deal. Its easy to change the main LinkStation share name to something imaginative like NAS1. You can hear the disk being written to, but noise isn't excessive, the fan only kicks in at a faster speed when required. The backup options built into the firmware look quite basic/confusing, but this is a 'nice to have' as I use SyncBackSE which is brilliant, lists all jobs in one central place and can be used in a simple or more sophisticated way as suits your needs. Since the NSLU2, I've been used to formatting to Ext3 for attached USB drives as the devices run on linux. I believe drivers are available for Windows to access the data directly off the USB drives in the event of a problem, but I've never tested this out. I've found the LinkStation excellent. I'd only add that its data should be backed up if it is being used to hold your sole copy of anything, in the same way as data should be backed up from any similar drive. Hard drives have moving parts and therefore fail.
Much improved after firmware update April 8, 2008 Peter T (UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Having read the reviews before purchasing, I took the plunge. Yes, the drive was prone to rattling away (often needlessly and in the middle of the night when all clients were switch off and in bed) but it is not a traditional drive. It has a raft of electronics surrounding it in the casing and has to organise and housekeep itself. So it is assumed this is what was going on. I visited the Buffalo website and discovered a firmware update for the drive. This was easy to download (though a sizeable object) and apply. Both me and a friend (who has the same unit as myself) can now claim that the drive is much much quieter. No doubt some early niggles have been addressed by the manufacturer. Overall, we are pleased with the purchase. This drive is also a print server and the manual details how to connect and configure a PC to use it as such. A great asset to anyones network.
Does what it says on the box December 28, 2007 Richard Lister (Halifax, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
How refreshing! I was dreading setting this up as everything I touch never works as it should. Well this did! The firmware needed upgrading but that was a download then an exe that did the whole thing. There are 3 of us on a wireless network here at home who can now read and write to it. The speed is fine for music and photos and backing up. We aren't using it for movies. The web access is cool and you inherit your rights as users to files and shares etc. It emails you as often as you want telling you it's working and how much space there is. The best thing about this is that you can add a couple of USB discs when you run out of space. All in all I'd thoroughly recommend it.
