5 out of 5 stars Outstanding piece of kit   October 15, 2008

A standard sized laptop, larger screen and the same spec would cost you the same if not more...

The Acer one is a superb machine, battery life is about 2.5 hrs on full charge and is light as a feather.

This one came with Linux which i immediately got rid off and installed my own copy of xp sp3 via usb key.

Upon doing this the laptop is much more functional and overall an excellent device.

I was considering Eeepc but i felt they looked kind of.. toy ish? the acer definately has the looks.
The keyboard is great to use, all keys in their correct places and sized great, it is rare i make a mistake whilst typing on it.

The cooling fan can get quite noisy for such a small device, it blows cold air half the time and like some others have done i may get some software to cut down this noise.

I use it in university for taking notes, for typing up essays whilst at work and in my spare time. Accessing the internet via wifi and soon mobile broadband. Just use it generally for communicating with others that i dont use my mobile phone for.

Webcam and microphone work spectacularly for a 0.3 mpixel, used on msn & skype and works a treat.

Headphones and audio jacks work great, wifi is great (all be it wireless G), ethernet / usb everything works great.

Resolution is comfortable to look at, screen viewing angle is very good for a laptop in this price range.

Overall id recommend it to virtually anyone looking for a second pc? sub laptop or just for the cool factor :)

This laptop can dual boot fine also.

5 out of 5 stars Sturdy little laptop, fits in handbag   September 8, 2008

I bought this laptop yesterday (7th Sept 2008). In fact I had bought a larger laptop with Windows Vista and when I saw this I also purchased two of these. I would agree with the previous comment. I am still trying to figure out how to load Skype onto this. I know other small laptops that have skype preloaded. Ive never used Linux before but I am sure I will get used to it. It is really simple to use and works straight away (much less complicated then Windows system). Within 5 minutes I was using Wifi in the Airport, with built in webcam. It has OpenOffice preloaded and various other programs. For the price you really cannot go wrong. It doesnt have a CD drive, but with SD slots and USB keys you can easily store information. I got fed up carrying larger heavy laptops to college everyday and this one is small enough and sturdy to fit into a handbag. I would definitely recommend this, despite no preloaded Skype. Im suprised they are not sold out as they are that good.

Just ordered this 2 days ago and am not disappointed. I've reached an endpoint with Windows and cannot stand continual reboots, so was looking for a light(so that I can take it on the tube), easy to use and cheap laptop with Linux. Installed Ubuntu as soon as I took it out of the box and it works like a dream. The Ubuntu forums have a dedicated area to loading Ubuntu on this very laptop, with some ace tips. Only downside is the battery life, however, you can get a 6 cell one for under 50 if you are going to use this extensively. Looks like my Vista PC will now be collecting dust!! Highly recommended and great value for money

I've had my Acer Aspire One for just over one week and I'm still in love!

Here's the best things about it. It's size and weight are perfect but even though the keyboard is smaller than I'm used to it's surprisingly good. The screen quality is excellent. It connected immediately to my local network, the browsing speed is superb and the connectivity around the house is better than my Mac! Setting up my email account was a doddle and incoming emails still appear on my main PC in Outlook even if I've opened them on the Acer. Downloading MP3 files is simple, the sound quality surprisingly good, particularly with headphones. Installing Skype proved a bit of a problem and you need to get behind the interface to add and remove programmes. Once I'd done this I was able to install other programmes with ease. The webcam is a bonus and works well although I've not managed to get it to work with Skype. (Tip: when downloading Skype make sure you chose the Fedora version).
All other installed programmes seems fine and on the whole I'm very impressed with the Linux system. It's a great system for anyone who is new to computers. My only gripe with the Acer is that the trackpad is a bit clunky. I've invested in a Lupo wireless mouse which has greatly enhanced my overall experience. I'd have to give this little machine 10 out of 10. It's certainly great value for money.
