5 out of 5 stars Excellent portable laptop - and faster than the SSD version!   September 17, 2008

Totally agree with the above review - great little laptop.

One point to add is that the SSD Linux version is not, I repeat NOT, any faster than the HDD based Windows version. Indeed on many tests the Windows version is significantly faster (particularly when it comes to installing software).

The only reason to get the Solid State Drive version is if you think it will prove more reliable and because it boosts battery life a little.

I bought this only because my brother didn't stop going on about it for MONTHS...he got his on the first release and has been actively involved in solving all the bugs it came with. I'm not much of a computer geek, but I have found it very easy to use as soon as it came out of the box.

5 out of 5 stars lovely machine   September 1, 2008

bought this as a "travel" laptop a couple of weeks ago

It's a very nice machine which really is a full function laptop in a small case. The keyboard is suprisingly usable - the touch-pad allows you to scroll down a page really easily by dragging two fingers - and the battery life is great - several hours of use.

The screen is also nice - good resolution and very easy to read.

A couple of reviews have suggested that toggling wifi/bluetooth on/off is tricky - it's not - there's a little utilty accessed from the bottom right of the screen which does it easily.

so far this does what it says on the tin!

5 out of 5 stars The best laptop i have owned   November 19, 2008

For those old timers amongst us who have wrestled with laptops overheating, dead pixels, and cantankerous operating system, the ASUS is a breath of fresh air.

To say that it is perfect would not be understating it. I use mine for a lot of DVD watching and am perpetually amazed at the high screen quality - better than my flat screen TV and desktop PC !

When I need to type, I find the keyboard adequate, and very manageable given the overall size of the product.

Browsing is a breeze - the WiFi is great - very good reception and quick too.

I have attached a sleek shiny white USB disk drive to it to add to the storage capacity (320Gb) and now have more than I'll ever fill up in this lefetime.

Most of all, this machine worked immediately out of the box in every respect - no fiddling around - no software to load - just turn it on - thats it!

The sound system is excellent too - especially with good headphone plugged in.

Lets hope ASUS continue to extend the range and improve the product - though in the case of the Eee 1000H it would be hard to see how this can be achieved.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant little machine   December 5, 2008

For those that don't want to read a long review, here are the highlights:

Pros: Battery, resolution, keyboard (mostly)
Cons: Mouse pad

Well, let me first say that the battery life on this little machine is amazing. I didn't buy it for heavy usage of video, audio or games. Mostly for web browsing, some web site development and a lot of remote desktop into work.

Today, I spent all day on this machine remoted into work and the battery gave me 5.5 hours. I never believe the manufacturers stated battery life. But this is about 2 hours more than what I thought I'd get.

The next thing I'm really impressed with is the screen resolution. Yes its only 1024x600, but there is a really smart compression facility that simulates 1024x768 by missing out pixels. This is amazing and works really well giving you considerably more vertical information.

The keyboard is great. I can touch type, and make very few mistakes with this keyboard. The only minus point that I can say on the keyboard is I use the Home and End keys a lot, and I have to press the Fn key to access them. However, that's not a big deal.

It is slightly heavier than some of its rivals, like the ACER, but the battery is most of that, and its a definitely plus. To be able to get over 5 hours life - now that's portable.

if I had to fault the machine, I'd say that the touch pad isn't the most responsive and the touch pad buttons, right on the edge, aren't exactly the easiest to use. But, its a small price to pay for such an astounding machine.

if you're not bothered about power and speed, and you want something that is portable that you're not going to have to plug in every 5 minutes, you can't go wrong with this machine. A colleague has the ACER, and he says he gets no more than 1.5 hours out of it.
