Remarkable. October 10, 2008 Dr. J. D. Mitchell (Plymouth, UK) 173 out of 174 found this review helpful
Put your iPod away, this little gadget is simply unbelievable and a bargain. Here are my thoughts: It is TINY. Wafer thin, light.. you'll hardly know it is there. But great build quality. It has a slick brushed aluminium case but with a plastic edge to guard against knocks. Well thought out and so practical. The sound quality is SENSATIONAL and the best I have heard on a player this size. Vastly superior to all Apple's offerings even with the suppplied (surprisingly excellent) earphones and for a cloth ears like me. It is so easy to use!! Intuitive. Logical. Can you use a mobile phone? Then you can use the features on this within minutes. Forget jog wheels (so early noughties!!) and navigate all your songs and videos with ease. Video is crystal clear although lets face it, you'll struggle with a movie on a screen this size. However, orientate the video horizontally and start downloading BBC TV programmes from iplayer. Transferring content fom your computer is childs play with drag and drop using media player 11 (supplied). Fantastic radio. Great for pictures. I could go on but then you'd get bored. Suffice to say this is a wonderful little machine which knocks it rivals for six. Buy it, music lover, and stand out from the crowd!!
Sony or iPod??? September 28, 2008 R. J. Matthews (UK) 209 out of 214 found this review helpful
If you are like me you're probably wondering whether to buy a Sony or get an iPod. Well I bought an iPod Nano in December 07 and then in July 08 when the iPod was full up I also bought a Sony Walkman A818 which I believe is very similar to this latest model albeit the new one has now has a radio and better battery life. So I hope you find this comparative review of help. Style When you hold the Nano and the Walkman side by side, you have to say that the iPod wins on sleek styling. The Sony is a very nicely made piece of kit (a bit like a nice phone) but its jut not as sleek as the iPod. Function This is where I believe the Sony starts to win. Although the iPod touch wheel is very stylish, I actually prefer the proper push button controls of the Walkman. I use my iPod/Walkman when I travel - by train, plane and car and so I keep them in protective leather cases. I find the positive controls of the Sony much easier to use on the move especially the volume control which is easy to adjust even when its in its case in your pocket. The battery life on both the Nano and Walkman is excellent (+24hrs) Sound Quality If you just want background music or are used to listening to your music on little speakers/radio then you are likely to be happy with the iPod. However if you like to listen to your music on a decent hifi system then there really is only one choice for you. Get the Sony! The Sony sounds much much better than the iPod! About two thirds of this is due to the vastly superior `in-ear' headphones that Sony supply, one third is due to the player itself. (note that some Sonys come with wireless headphones which may be more convenient but they loose sound quality in the process). But even disregarding the relative quality of the headphones, you will be amazed at just how much hifi sound Sony have been able to get from this tiny player. The iPod sounds clean and detailed but rather flat and it lacks the subtle musicality and 3D sound of the Sony. Even using a pair of + 200 hifi headphones, the Sony still sounds excellent and frankly the Sony headphones aren't that far behind! However if , like my daughter, you cant stand in-ear phones some of this advantage will be lost - but overall the iPod phones are disappointing and from family experience they are also rather unreliable ( 2 failures in 2 years) and at 20 for a replacement its well worth looking at some of the very good alternative phones available. Finally, the Sony also has an excellent range of sound enhancement settings including a user adjustable graphic equaliser which allow you to fine tune your listening enjoyment. Video Quality Playing video clips wasn't why I bought these machines but they are both actually very good at it . But if you really want a serious video player you'll want something like the iPod Classic with lots more than 8gb of memory. My son tells me that there are far more videos available for the iPod than the Sony so that's worth investigating too. Software Apple brought out the iPod and gave us iTunes as the computer interface and what an excellent piece of software it is. Meanwhile Sony brought out the Walkman and gave us Sonic Sound Stage software that everyone hated. It was only in 2008 that Sony finally gave up and made their machines compatible with Windows Media Player - so now at last its easy to load music on and off your Walkman. Also by using the latest free Sony Media Manager software you be pleased to find that the Walkman can also load up your iTunes files as long as they are AAC file format. Its all very usable now but its not as simple as using an iPod with iTunes with its access to iTunes Store if you like buying your music by direct download. Summary Considering the amazing quality of the Walkman I was wondering why the iPod has been so much more successful than the Sony. I decided it was due to 3 points:- 1) Apple concentrated on style while Sony concentrated on quality. 2) Apple gave us a very polished piece of software called iTunes which was easy to use whereas until recently Sony persevered with the far inferior Sonic Stage software. 3) Apple called their creation iPod Nano. Sony called their latest creation SONY NWZS638FS.CE7. Catchy name isn't it? Come on Sony, you can do better than that! I love listening to really good quality music so I would choose the Sony every time - even if it was a lot more expensive than the iPod! I think in too many ways the iPod is a triumph of style over function and sound quality has taken a back seat. In contrast my son and daughter would both choose the iPod - because style and convenience is more important to them and sound quality is less important. The choice is yours!
Best bit of kit I have owned October 22, 2008 Rich 62 out of 63 found this review helpful
This purchase was a direct replacement for a previous Sony MP3 that I had owned for 5 years and had been very pleased with. However, within minutes this machine had won me over and then some.First off the player is tiny and therefore ideal for those long trips especially on the train where you do not want a bulky machine.Secondly, the sound quality is far superior to the Ipod equivalent IMO and the machine is a joy to use (I found it similar to a Nokia phone in many respects. Many people, me included, had hated the old Sonic Stage software but the drag & drop now used is quickly learnt & easy to use. The only minus points are that the earphones are a horrible fit and the screen is far too small for anything other than the occassional short view. In summary, I consider this to be the market leader if you can get past the design which is the only area that the ipod still trumps the Sony.
Outstanding Product from Sony November 13, 2008 Ian buys stuff from amazon 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
Don't buy an MP3 player until you've considered this little gem from Sony! Sound quality is better, much better, than on the IPod. Integration with WMP11 and Windows is good. Apparently it works with iTunes as well for those that use it, but I haven't tried that. Video transfers easily and looks surprisingly good - colours are rich, picture is sharp and motion is clear. I was sceptical about the SenseMe feature (the player analyzes the music and categorises into channels such as classical, upbeat, lounge etc). I thought, yeah, right, but was pleasantly surprised at the job it does. There are some odd decisions it makes, but on the whole this is a useful feature. Now I listen to one of the channels depending on what mood I'm in. This is an improvement on shuffle as I am less likely to want to skip over tracks that don't match my mood. I am delighted with this player.
