Why not for amateurs? (if you can afford it!) February 21, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have one of these and I am an amateur. It really is a superb bit of kit and has really made me think hard about whether I should ever be shooting film again. When you consider its capabilities and the price of equivalent resolution digital backs for medium format cameras, it is not that outrageously expensive (no, really). Since it feels like it is machined out of a solid block of magnesium (which it probably is) I doubt that you could easily break it, even if you tried to load it with film! The only reservation I would have is over the performance of the ultra wide Canon L zooms on the camera. It is a shame that Nikon do not make the 17-35 f2.8 AFS in an EOS mount, but you can't have everything.
No competition for this top class camera July 11, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Beware the guy from Harlow - I think a section to the nearest mental hospital is appropiate - anyhow, as a national industrial photographer I can say with total conviction, that there is at present no camera in the WORLD (as a digital SLR) that comes anywher near the performance that the 1DS offers - if its used for your liveleyhood then this is the top in its field and well worth the 4999 that you can buy it for!
EOS 1Ds THE BEST SO FAR ? September 18, 2003 19 out of 23 found this review helpful
Firstly this is a PROFESSIONAL CAMERA and is also the best digital camera on the open market today.Full frame 35mm viewing and you get what you see. I also have an EOS1D & a 10D. I have not shot a roll of film for eighteen months and have never been busier. Digital is here to stay. The 1Ds gives me the equivalent file to a 6 x 4.5 medium format camera. Without the need of extensive bracketing. I shoot less, am in charge of the image and I'm happy.
NOT FOR AMATEURS February 8, 2004 3 out of 12 found this review helpful
The review left by the gentleman from harlow essex, by no means represents what this camera is capable of. and to be perfectly honest, if your photographic prowes was such that you found a need for this camera then this would not be the place for purchase, unless that is, if your money out weighed your sense..so to speak. this is a ( i suppose ) a "really really flashy camera" but just like buying a new ferrari, it would be no use to you if you had no arms or legs! i would suggest for the gentle man in question an entry level non slr digital camera ( a point and shoot ) or maybe a film version, i presume then that he would have more luck loading the film in the first place! the canon d1s is one of a very small number of full frame pro digital slr's avaliable on the market today, and probably the best ( opinions vary ) this camera is as simple or as complex as you would like it to be, but be prepared for a certain amount of brain taxing if you have never used a canon slr before, not to mention a pro digital one. you will also need a reasonable understanding of how to use computer software that is associated with models such as this, for example, photoshop 6,7 or CS, also yarcplus etc... if your still into this, then try the canon eos 10d, the younger brother of the high end digital eos cameras, cheaper by far. watch out for the eos1d mk2!!!! a top camera
