nothing to touch it at the price February 4, 2008 dylan (England) 33 out of 33 found this review helpful
as a previous owner of the E500 i was waiting for the next version to come out, minus all the little niggles such as the control buttons on the rear body which had too soft an action and frequently engaged in the middle of a shot while holding the camera, with the auto focus and write speed lagging behind in real time use, and the flash resetting itself randomly, etc. I was hopeful that the boffins at Olympus would realise their shortcomings and do the job properly this time. THEY HAVE!!! Everything is now quicker, and better positioned and balanced, with another 2 megapixels on top bringing it up to 10 rather than 8. This baby does exactly what the previous version didn't and has new buttons with a stiffer action and slightly offset layout away from your thumbs resting position, as well as live view so you can see what you are pointing at on the lcd screen from a distance and within limits at an angle, at last. The Leica designed ED lenses are also much smaller and sharper, a bit clunky in action, but a lot better balanced, the new version 40-150 is half the size of the bazooka it was previously. All in all a vast improvement, as one reviewer on the net said, 'this is the camera you wish Olympus had made before', well this time they have, an excellent bit of kit buy it!
Excellent little camera March 27, 2008 Mr. S. Wilkins (Wigan) 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
Having been a Canon user for sometime now ie 350 & 400D, I decided to give a 4/3 camera a try. So after reading loads of reviews the Olympus E-510 is the one i went for and ive not been dissapointed one little bit. To start off with it has tons of features like live view, built in body IS, anti dust system ect plus you can use either XD or compact flash or both together, also a biggy for me is spot metering 3 different types to boot aswell, eh Canon only just finally decided to add this to it's overpriced 450D. Another good thing with this camera is the supplied 14-42mm & 40-150mm both very well built & very very good optics considering they kit lenses, & the pictures this camera can produce are nothing short of excellent ISO noise control is also very good. Another plus with 4/3 cameras is it 2x so if you invest in say a 300mm lens it becomes 600mm very handy. Now onto the viewfinder loads of reviews said the viewfinder was small but to be honest it's not that small similar to the 400D just more square. All in all you get alot of features for your money with the E-510 for a very good price & if your condsidering getting your first DSLR I would easily recommend the Olympus E-510.
Superb camera! August 11, 2007 Mr. C. Mcculloch (Ayrshire, Scotland) 45 out of 46 found this review helpful
Had one since June, with the standard kit lens. Optics superb, very sharp. Colours great straight from the camera. No fringing, Image stabilisation works great (1-2 stops extra). Dust filter works great - never seen any dust on any images. Handling great - just the right feel, weight and balance. Very light weight with kit lens. Images slightly soft, easily fixed by setting the camera to Low Noise Filter and Sharpening to -1 to get the best RAW images. Aperture of f3.5-f5.6 not as wide as some (comparable to other kit lenses) - can get a wider standard zoom but more expensive. The Image Stabilisation lets you take shots at lower shutter speed though. Build quality good, except the card cover appears flimsy.
EVOLT-ution July 21, 2007 S. M. Brown (Wigan, Greater Manchester) 82 out of 85 found this review helpful
There was no competition between the Olympus E510, Canon EOS series and the Nikon D80x... the Olympus E510 won hands down. A beautiful camera with great functions such as Image Stabilisation, a Dust reduction system (SSWF- Super-Sonic Wave Filter) and Live View, it has everything the amateur and professional photographer could want. Having previously used only digital cameras I have found it fairly straight forward to configure. It is quite lightweight (for an DSLR) and the image quality is vividly breathtaking. I would recommend getting the double lens kit to start with rather than the single lens 14-42mm to take full advantage of this cameras capabilities. The Canon EOS series and Nikon's are seriously lagging behind the E-510 and for the additional 'must have' features it is worth the extra pounds.
The best camera for this money, heres why........... June 14, 2008 R. Gash 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Realistically, this camera is too cheap for what you get.....basically, as there is a lot of brand snobbishness among camera buyers, Olympus need to offer more, for less money.....this is a great bargain for anyone buying on merit, rather than anything else.....I chose the 510 because; a) Leica designed lens ( not branded ) offer the best kit lens quality, no contest b) any 10mega pixel camera, will offer very close image quality to any other one, so the difference is in lens quality and features c) IS - works amazingly well, no more blurred photos d) liveview, excellent for close up work, or tripod work e) build quality, looks AND feels like it cost much much more, in fact the feel is better than many pro camera costing 3 times as much. finally, the image quality is excellent, and the menu lcd system is very easy to use......add in top of class battery life, top of class lens quality, top of class build quality, top of class feautres, and its no wonder this camera was EISA 2007-08 best camera.....total bargain at this price, nothing comes close, despite the hype............
