Having delayed moving to a DSLR for a number of years, I feel the market has now stabalised in the way of features, and prices have come down considerably.
I started looking at the 350D then the 400D and then the 450D, but luckily decided to opt for the 40D, especially as the additional price over the 450D seemed justified for the extra build. To be honest the features of the 450D are not that far behind the 40D, although what you are paying for is mainly the build quality - die cast aluminum and stainless steel body, etc.
Similar to the 450D the 40D includes a 'live view' function, which you may feel is essential if you are used to a compact, although in reality you are unlikely to use very often.
The lens is very good and another reason why I opted for the 40D over the 400D or 450D, although I believe the lens on the 450D is superior to that of the 400D.
You get a 17 - 85mm, which in old SLR terminology relates to 28 - 135mm. It is very quiet in operation, being a USM lens, and also includes IS (Image Stabilisation) which does reduce the effects of camera shake, especially in low light conditions, by up to 4 stops.
The stabilisation is actually in the lens which may seem odd compared to other lens/camera manufacturers, although it does mean that the image you see through the viewfinder has been stabilised as opposed to other systems which only appear stabilised after you have taken the photo.
Camera is intuitive and easy to use in fully auto mode, until you become familiar with all the manual features. This is a large camera, especially suitable for those with larger clumsy hands!
I have no regrets whatsoever and would recommend to anyone who is above the amateur, or at least thinks they are, who wishes to pay that extra to own a higher quality 'fully loaded' product.
Don't be put off by 10+ mpg image; this is sufficient for images up to at least A3 if not even A2. Last point - I have purchased the Sandisk 4GB Extreme III card which I believe is an excellent choice having researched just about every other card out there. Really no need to go above 4GB as this is sufficient for 999+ jpg at the highest quality. Unlike compacts there is no facility for recording mpeg video so no need for big cards.
For those tempted, don't delay your purchase - you will not be dissapointed.

Was toying between the new 450D and the 40D for quite a while. After using a 450D which is a great camera I decided to pay the extra and go for the 40D. The 40D in my opinion has a few significant advantages over the 450D.
The 40D has a magnesium alloy frame making in very robust. It is much bigger and for me just seemed to be better in the hand (and around the neck). The 40D can shoot over 6 frames a second. Doing this is almost like firing off an M16! Perhaps the most important factor was the picture quality you are able to get out of the 40D. It is wonderful on the auto settings and when you become more confident to use the manual settings, even better.
I love my 40D and there really isn't a great deal I can say I don't like about it. If you are new to digital photography the 450D will serve you really well. If you can afford the extra, want a camera that will last longer, is user friendly, will grow with you as your knowledge grows, go for the 40D.

I've owned a 350d for about 2 years now, great camera but i just fancied a change. After loads of research and visits to my locaL camera store i decided on the 40D, this camera is A1 in all departments, you will not find a better camera in Quality and features that actually work for the money anywhere. I already own a Sigma DG 28-300 Lense (not the best of lenses, but its half decent) on my 350D results were good, but when this was twined with my 40D it's a gem, the pictures are much sharper and vibrant. To top it off , it comes with great software aswell, in particular the photostitch software included, it's simple and powerful, i stiched 4 photos together in about 5 minutes with perfect results !

As a confirmed Canon fan, having previously owned the 350D, I would thoroughly recommend the 40D. The 350D was a great camera and I considered buying both a 450D and a 30D before opting for the 40D. While the 450D has many of the features in common with the 40D the extra size and "feel" of the 40D make it far more comfortable in my large hands. The camera is a pleasure to use and I found the controls and menu system straightforward and intuitive. I debated whether to buy "body only" but the image stabilised 17-85mm lens included in the kit swung it for me. To anyone thinking of buying a digital SLR in this price bracket I would suggest you seriously consider the 40D!

I have just taken delivery of this camera and kit yesterday and am just coming to terms with all the options.
i have just upgraded from the Samsung GX-10 (twin lens kit) as i wanted to expand the lenses i have and much more lenses are available for Canon cameras.
Firstly, on paper the spec for this camera did not appear much better than the samsung but how wrong was i to wonder how the Canon would compare. The images are sharper, the colours better and all the functions are available without having to scroll through the menus.
The camera is a bit larger than the samsung and also the Canon 400D or 450D but not significantly heavier.
The best feature so far is the very impressive image stabilising which you can actaully see working in the viewfinder. This works a treat especially as you zoom in further.
The auto focus is also very fast and accurate, rarely struggling to lock on to anything. It is also hardly audible when it locks focus.
The only down side is the Canon remote (RC-1) does not work with this camera and the only one that does is ridiculous money. This is dissappointing as the cheaper samsung was compatible with cheap remotes.
All in all this is a first class camera though and i would recommend this to anyone in the market for a D-SLR.
