Product Description
Olympus has added another camera to its popular E-400 range with the E-420! This model is the successor to the E-410 and is loaded with a host of powerful technologies, including an 11.8-megapixel Live MOS sensor and a large 2.7 LCD screen. The E-420 is incredibly portable and easy to use, and is one the smallest digital SLR camera ever made by its manufacturer, Olympus. It captures images with bright colours and finite details, thanks to its face detection system and special compensation function, which counteracts the effects of shade. It has 18 scene modes and 28 shooting modes, so even beginners can try their hand at photography and get brilliant results. The E-420 is also equipped with an automatic mode, a semi-automatic mode and a manual mode for greater flexibility when youre taking photos. Its Live MOS sensor pays attention to detail, while its anti-dust filter, unique to Olympus, uses a supersonic wave to dislodge any dust that has settled on the sensor. This filter is activated every time you turn the camera on, so you can be sure of taking fantastic shots every time! With the E-420, Olympus has shown us yet again that high-tech photography is accessible to everyone! Please note that this SLR camera is supplied with a ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 "Pancake" lens, which can be used for macro photography.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera   July 21, 2008

I am new to SLR cameras but wanted good camera as I am going on a 3 month trip early next year. I did a bit of research and I have had olympus cameras before so I decided to get the Olympus E420. I just went for weeks holiday and I brought the camera with me to get used to it. The camera is really easy to use and the quality of the pictures are second to none. Within the space of 5 minutes I was up and running. The controls are really simple to use. The auto focus feature allows you to point the camera, press auto focus and shoot. The camera has multple different scene selections that sets the different features such as flash intensitity, shutter speed etc... for you based to the different scene you select. These different scenes really make a difference to the pictures produced. All of these can be configured manually but I havnt got that far yet. The two lenses are again very eay to use as the auto focus does that last bit of focusing for you. (This can also be done manually). One of the main reasons why I went for this camera is that as when travelling for the 3 months I want a small camera and this camera is very neet and tidy and exactly what I want for my trip. I know I have only touched on the potential of this camera and have lots to learn but it has impressed me, so much so that I decided to write this review. So I would totally recommend this camera to a novice like myself who wants to learn how to use a slr camera.

I previously owned a canon D400 and found it lacking in features and the lenses were very expensive and to be honest not as good as the hype suggested, so I thought I would make a break from the "Canon Pack" and try the new Olympus E420. I can say that I am very pleased I did. The image quality is excellent ( better than I achieved from my Canon D400). Its lighter, smaller and packed with features, Live view works in all modes and does not switch off when you focus onto a subject like Canons new D450 does. The build quality is also better than canon equivalents. Of paticular note is the ease in which the settings can be accessed on the olympus through a one menu set all mode. Athough it does not have a image stabiliser mode, images are still pin sharpe. The 14-42 lens is very good and achives very good results, a good wide angle and close up lens. The 40-150 lense is very good and again achieve good telephoto results and it is also a very good walk about lens. I would thoroughly recommened the Olympus E420 to my friends' Its a very good camera to introduse yourself into the world of the DSLRs.

5 out of 5 stars Very Handy!   August 17, 2008

My main camera is a Nikon D80 which I use with heavy lenses and a battery pack. I love it to bits, but found I was in need of something I could have with me at all times to capture those "moments" that always crop up when you DON'T have a camera to hand. I personally can't stand point-and-shoot cameras - not for any snob value, purely because I can't get on with them. I like a viewfinder.

The Olympus has liveview, so it's a useful tool for P&S fans, but I'm not a fan. The big thing about this camera is it's size, and the quality of the images it can produce. It's small enough to take everywhere, but big enough to function as an SLR. I'm just getting used to it, so I'm far from a whizz with it yet, but the key thing is that I LOVE taking it out with me and using it.

The pictures I've got out of the kit lens are pin-sharp, though there is a tendency for highlights to get blown a bit more than I'd like. The menu system takes a bit of getting used to after the Nikon, but it's far from being rocket science - it gets more intuitive the more you use it, and anyway there's nothing wrong with slowing down and thinking ahead before taking a picture.

For such a small camera it feels very solidly built (even more so than the D80).
Highly recommended!

Sit down quietly with the specifications of this camera from the Olympus UK home-page on your screen, and read what this camera can do. Then you read these reviews, so that I can tell you that this camera does all of that, very well, and with ease. In fact, there are functions I may never use again, but it's there if you need it.

You don't have to be always on edge using it. Stick it in Auto or P (program) mode and fire away. It'll do the rest for you, without even the suggestion of not quite fulfilling its promise. Then just look at what you and your Olympus can do. For the next time, look at what the Olympus E420 has to offer, and try something a bit different. And so on. All good Olympus cameras seem to "grow" on the people who own them, and my first Olympus dates back to 1977.

And this is a "good" Olympus, which makes it a superb camera when compared with Brand-X. The build quality is impeccable, the functions are intuitive, as long as you don't try to run before you can walk, and the results are outstanding. It certainly will grow on you. I cannot imagine I will ever need more from a stills camera.

I bought mine in this bundle, with two zoom lenses, and I've added an Olympus flash, the FL-36, and an Olympus macro lens, the 35mm f3.5 macro, (which also doubles up as a fixed lens, for all purposes except "wide" applications.) Their integration into the E-series body is just perfect. If flash or macro photography are important to you, put in the money to buy these Olympus accessories. As soon as you use them you will be glad you didn't try for any short-cuts.

There are extra functions available on the E520, but that camera has all the characteristics that have got me enthusing in this E420. You pays your money and you takes your choice, but you enjoy your Olympus in either case.
