very good March 26, 2007 Julian S. Smith (rio, brasil) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The sound quality is very good - better than an i-pod in my opinion. The player seems very robust as I have dropped it on a hard floor without breaking. Works very well for running and other sports activities. The functions are easy to use although you should read the pdf instruction document that comes on the cd that enables the Sonicstage software. As for recharging, the players comes without a mains recharger (only a cable to recharge via a computer), but I have a number of usb rechargers (for my blackberry and Motorola V3 mobile phone) and both recharge this machine without a problem. I flew long haul last week and the battery lasted 14 hours with a few stops. The one thing you have to get used to with this player - there is no on/off switch. I just stop the player playing and then put it in "hold" mode. I had to get used to this and it may cause some people to think the battery life is less than claimed.
This is a Sports player not a fashion statement. August 4, 2007 F. Patel (England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I have been using MP3 players for around 4 years now, primarily in the Gym. (In fact I was the first person to do so) I have owned around 6 MP3 players. (Sweat and MP3 players don't seem to mix well) This Sony MP3 player is designed for use in the Gym. It is small, it comes with its own arm band and it is sweat proof and most of all it has been designed ergomically. If you want to wear a fashion statement buy something else. If you want a tool you can use under a running jacket, then have a look at this one.) As for the Sonic Stage Software. I haven't experienced any problems I use XP, I convert all my Music first in MP3, then convert those files into the Sony Format. On the headphones issue I am unable to wear the hard plastic headphones that have come supplied with every MP3 player I have bought. I buy the Silicone ear bud types. (Plenty on the market) which are a lot more comfortable and actually sound a lot better. (But then I prefer comfort over looks) Battery wise I have been to the gym 3 times this week totalling 6 hours and I have around half a charge left. If I have any gripe it is how easy it is knock the USB cable out of the player when I am charging it up. Other than that this has to be the one of the best players I have used for the gym. Once again this is a Sports player and not a fashion statement. And no I don't work for Sony.
Great companion for athletes, but get better headphones May 4, 2008 P. Turnbull (Tynemouth, England) Wow! Just ran 10 miles and the Sony NW-S205 measured it as 9.6. Step and calorie counts are included too. That's pretty impressive for such a small MP3 player. Arm band was also comfortable and player remained water proof against the rain. Oh, and sound quality is good so long as you get better headphones. I combined it with the Sony MDREX85LPB In-Ear Headphones. They remained in place throughout my run.
Tidy little gadget October 20, 2006 iPlod (UK) 81 out of 84 found this review helpful
Bought one of these to help with long distance running and it works a treat. Being used to an iPod it took a little while to get used to the navigation keys but one quick read of the PDF manual sorted that out. Once configured (several long runs), the calory/distance counter was accurate to within about 400 metres at the end of the Amsterdam marathon (42.195km). The arm band was comfortable throughout and sound quality on the provided headphones was OK. It loses a star as the earphones aren't adjustable plus, after a few long sweaty runs, they seemed to lose therir crispness (maybe sweat damage). I'll replace them with something better. also, the currenlt release only has the arm band. Aclip and lnyard are apparently available soon as optional accessories but i can't find them anywhere. FM radio reception is generally good unless running below a cliff (as I do often). MW would be nice as we still have some good stations on MW that you can't get on FM It should lose another STAR as Sony do not make Apple mac version of the software needed load music and playlists and you can't use i-Tunes. I'm a Mac user and find this really anoying. It's not a problem specific to this Walkman but to the Software Sony supply so I won't deduct a point but Mac users beware.
