5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and what a wonderful colour too!   February 12, 2007

If you are a runner, then this HAS to be on your shorts somewhere. Steve Jobs has freed up the lone-runner experience over the past few years. Only 4 or 5 years ago my right hand had a Sony Waterproof Cassette Walkman velcro'ed to it (if the Walkman was clipped to your waist it jumped and warbled too much) which also meant to carry a water bottle tied up both your hands.

The first generation iPod Shuffle was a revalation, not only could you carry more music than you needed even for a marathon but it fitted into the key pocket on most running shorts. (but your house key was relegated to being tied on to your laces)

Now with the new version, you can clip it to your shorts and feel no bulk or weight atall whilst running along to all your best running and motivational tunes. And your keys can go back into the thoughtfully placed pocket on your shorts.

The included headphones, like for all iPods are pretty awful and do not stay in your ears when running but other than that the new Shuffle has to be the best workout kit (and bargain) of the year.

As of this week in the US Apple have released the Shuffle in a number of different (bright and terrific) colours. They are outstanding.....

5 out of 5 stars Critical fault with iTunes 7.0.2 : Please Read   February 18, 2007

It is ESSENTIAL that when you first sync the shuffle you enable disk use via the option in iTunes. This prevents iTunes from automatically disconnecting the shuffle. If you do not do this, the shuffle is disconnected automatically as soon as you plug it in, which means you are unable to update it. You will get the messages "Unknown error: Device cannot be read from or written to" which is displayed because the iPod has been disconnected although iTunes doesn't' realise it has disconnected it. iTunes will then freeze and you will be unable to reset the iPod or enable disk use. So make sure you enable Disk Use the very first time you plug in your shuffle! Otherwise you will have to manually reformat the Shuffle (so iTunes thinks that it is brand new) which is extremely complicated.

As usual, Apple deny the fault but I can confirm after looking for a solution on internet forums that hundreds of people are experiencing it.

Other than that, it is a great little gadget. Excellent sound quality, low noise and absolutely ideal for joggers, gym-goers, gardening, washing the car etc etc

5 out of 5 stars The best MP3 ever!!!!!!   March 20, 2007

I tried many MP3 in the past but I gave up on each of them as I not good with computers, but the day I saw this Apple iPOD shuffle in blue, I knew I had to try one more time with MP3 player.

When I got it, I plug it in my computer, read the small booklet and I was up and running with iTunes in no time, I couldn't believe how easy it was , I was buying songs and sorting my list and all sorts.

This was so easy to setup that now my sister has one now and it's so small I can hide it anywhere in my coat or whatever I wearing,I listening to it now as I type, the sound great too.

This is the best MP3 player I ever brought, not only it's colourful, right size, got a good memory, a handy clip and a good battery, it has restore my faith in actally getting something working computer wise, now if only I can get my wireless router working LOL!

At less at 55 pounds it a must buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Another great product from Apple   August 1, 2007

First thing to say is that the shuffle is very small and light and yet feels very well made when you look at it and hold it. Whatever you might think about the trendiness of Apple products, you have to say they have style and the Shuffle is no exception. It's simple and it looks great.

In use - and it won't take you long to work out how to - I found the shuffle didn't budge at all when I was running. Earphones might be another matter which is why I've left the Apple earphones in the box and bought some Beyerdynamic SX10s instead. The Shuffle comes with the dock and USB cable to connect straight to your PC and as I already had itunes installed it appeared without fuss and I was able to get it to fill from a couple of my playlists within seconds. You have various options about how you want it to fill up so you can for example either get it to autofill from your entire collection (though not a good idea if you have a load of Spanish language CDs in your library!), autofill from a number of playlists until it's full or just create a specific 'Shuffle Playlist' and then you can choose pretty accurately what goes on it. All my CDs are stored at 320kbps and I didn't bother changing them to a different bitrate for the Shuffle - and at that rating I can fit about 100 tracks on it which is plenty for what I need it for. This isn't going to be a replacement for a bigger ipod but then it isn't meant to be.

Sound quality is as good as my normal ipod. Only point to note is that, as there's no real interface to choose tracks, if you have a 30-track playlist of exercise music on it and then a 30-track playlist of something else on it, to get to the 'something else' you will need to skip through your first 30 tracks each time when in sequential mode (in shuffle mode, you might be out running and then suddenly be learning how to order a small portion of mushrooms in Spanish!). The point of the Shuffle though is in it's name so I can hardly criticise it for that. Best to just let it autofill from whatever it finds and get acquainted again with some of those CD tracks that you always skip over.

5 out of 5 stars Marvellous bit of kit   February 22, 2007

When one sets eyes on a new iPod Shuffle you will almost purr with satisfaction. Trust me!

The form factor of the little Shuffle is perfect. As you would expect from Apple, the construction appears to be spot on. The spring-loaded clip on the reverse of the shuffle requires just the right amount of pressure to open it; not too much, not too little. The Play/Pause button operates with a positive 'click', as do the Volume Up/Down and Skip Forward/Back button. On the underside of the Shuffle are two small metal buttons; one to set the Shuffle to play in shuffle or continuous mode and one to turn the Shuffle on or off. There is also a multifunction LED that conveys what the Shuffle is up to.

The annodised aluminum case is really pretty. I went for 'blue' but I reckon the Shuffles must look superb in any of the colours Apple is currently offering them in. 'Orange' would have been a great choice, I think. IPod Shuffles don't have screens so if you if you need to know the name of a track you have been listening to, you will have to wait until you dock your Shuffle with you computer. You can then consult your 'Recently Played' playlist, if you have set one up in iTunes.

The box the Shuffle comes in is another example of Apple's great packaging. Unpacking the Shuffle is a joy in itself. The Shuffle is secured to a clear plastic insert just under the lid of the see-through plastic box. Removing the Shuffle itself uncovers the dock and headphones. There is also Quick Start instruction card, but you may not even need to read this, so simple is the Shuffle to operate. Also included are two Apple stickers.

The headphones are better quality than the pair that came with my 3rd generation iPod. They fitted my ears well and there was no inclination for them to fall out. The dock is USB and not FireWire, like early 'full size' iPods. The underside of the dock is rubberised so, allied to its weight, it is less likey to slide around on your desk.

Sound quality is every bit as good as my old iPod, even though there are no EQ settings to play with. And it is loud! I don't know what percentage of full volume I was running mine at, but it was definately louder than my 3rd generation iPod with it EU volume cap.

Integration with my iMac G5 and iTunes 7 went smoothly. Plugging the dock into a USB port and then docking the Shuffle resulted in iTunes asking me weather I wanted iTunes to automatically pick out a selection of songs from my library (therefore optimising storage capacity) or whether I wanted to manually pick my own. I choose the latter and dragged-and-dropped a few albums onto the newly created Shuffle playlist. iTunes took care of the rest and transferred them onto the Shuffle.

So if you want a great sounding, extremely handy MP3 player, look carefully at the iPod Shuffle. The great price and the addition of 'colours' has made it one of the must-have gadgets of 2007.
