Good but not Great July 8, 2007

I bought this little player approx. 1 month ago in Japan. I believe it is the exact same model made for export/sale in the UK. First the highlights:
- strongest battery life of any MP3 player I have ever owned (this is my 3rd). I have yet to be in the middle of a workout, jog, plane ride, etc. and have the battery quit on me. Manual says 30 hours, but that is subjective depending on your usage.
- small, sleek design with fairly easy to use controls. My manual is in Japanese and I was still able to figure out all the features just by trial/error so I am sure armed with the book in English it would be even easier. it also has a small screen which will show a tiny display of your uploaded jpeg album art. a cool extra I think and it compliments the scrolling artist/song dispaly nicely.
- the sound quality is very good with some limited EQ funtions but like most players it should sound better with upgraded headphones. overall it produces the rich full sound you would expect with any Sony audio product.
the lowlights...
- as I am sure you have already read elsewhere, the only way to get this little gem to perform it's only function - playing music! - you have to use Sony's Sonic Stage software which can be a bit cumbersome and although it comes equipped with a USB plug built into it's base it's not as if you can simply plug it into any USB supported device (your work PC or car audio) and just play away. Without the Sony software installed to read the files, it won't work.
- and I guess Sony is not promoting this player for sports use because mine came with no accessories and I cannot find any in local shops. No neck strap, armband or anything. you get the player, the headphones and that's about it.
So, -1 star for the mandatory proprietary software and a lack of accessories. JMO
