Great MP3 player, but use good headphones August 19, 2007 Osman (London, UK) 52 out of 53 found this review helpful
Compared to the 2GB Stone Plus, this player lacks a screen as well as other functions like a FM receiver and dictating recorder, none of which are essential for the core function of playing music, and from what I gather are of dubious quality. As for the 1GB capacity on this one, it is perfectly adequate and takes a dozen albums at 192Kbps. With battery life of up to 10 hours you'll just about get to play ten or twelve albums before a recharge is required via the supplied USB. At this point you'll probably be updating the music on the player anyway, so higher memory capacity is a bit redundant. I chose the black version and it is the typical glossy plastic, piano black type of finish, which is very smart but will collect scratches if not handled with care. The optional silicone skin would help here, but the player would be hidden away, and it really ought not to be. File transfer is straightforward with Windows Media Player 11 or the downloadable Creative Media Lite. Transfer speeds are good. Albums can be transferred in their folders, meaning you can skip an album using the slide control on the player. The regular play/pause, fast forward/rewind, change track all work a treat. The LED flashes, stays steady, and changes colour to indicate various states of charge and use, and the lack of a screen is not a problem here. The sound quality is superb and I cannot fault it at all, although this is when listening with Sennheiser HD202 closed back headphones. The supplied in-ear earphones are uncomfortable and have very poor sound; rendering everything tinny, indistinct and very unpleasant. You will not be doing the player justice without good ear/headphones. If you're contemplating this or the 2GB Stone Plus, I'd advise that unless you really need the additional functions and capacity, choose this 1GB model and spend the difference on headphones or music.
Remarkable October 31, 2007 K. C. Simm (Lancashire UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
It is remarkable how light this piece of kit is. It is remarkable how small this piece of kit is. It is equally astonishing what a great piece of design this is. As others have compared the Stone to I-Pod I won't bother other than to say without pre-prejudice this is simply one of the finest pieces of useful technology I have seen. It does exactly what it says it will do. No more, no less. It is very easy to use. Just sync with Windows Media player and away you go. It is very easy on the eye. Well except for the pink one, which is PINK. The sound is exceptional whatever genre you are into. The only downside is that the ear phones supplied may need upgrading but it depends what you are satisfied with. Remember it is extremly small and light and could easily be lost. It does actually fit on a key ring which is useful. It is, overall, remarkable.
Delightful little player! December 6, 2007 Siani (Swansea, UK) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this little MP3 player, after finally having enough of lugging around a Sony CD Walkman and loads of CDs. Definitely time to join the 21st century! This player is a lovely, uncomplicated little machine. It requires no software whatsoever - Windows recognises it immediately, as a removable drive. You simply attach the USB lead and hook it up to your computer to charge it. Adding music and podcasts to it is as simple as dragging a file from your hard drive and dropping it into the Zen Stone Folder. Operation is simple, via a central on/off button, surrounded by up/down volume buttons, and forward/back buttons. There are no complex menus to negotiate, which means that once the button positions are memorised (which takes seconds), you can operate it without even taking it out of your pocket. One thing that might take a new user off-guard, is the on/off switch. You need to depress it for a few seconds, then let go, in order to turn it on/off. Another plus is its tiny size and weight - it's smaller and lighter than one of those tiny silicon sachets that often come packed with electrical goods. It takes up less space in your pocket or bag than a key fob, but despite its size, it produces a lovely, rich sound, best experienced by upgrading from the headphones which come with it. The headphones aren't bad, but don't do the player justice - however, at such a low price, that's understandable. I purchased a separate pair of Creative Labs EP-630/A Earphones, as they're currently on special offer. If you're looking for a basic, easy to use, small, light, nice-looking MP3 player, with a decent sound quality, the Zen Stone is well worth considering. It might not have a screen or a huge storage capacity, but the 1 GB capacity should be ample for users who don't want to carry all their music files around with them (who does?). It's certainly a nice, economical alternative to the iPod shuffle.
Gorgeously fab MP3 Player August 2, 2007 Ms. K. J. Downs 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've owned phillips HDD and a creative nano previously, but this little dude is particularly sleak and ideal if you are just wanting something to plug and go. It is much easier to transfer tracks compared to the creative nano, and is much more practical and robust than the nano. Although it only comes with a USB charger, it does fit and recharge from motorola phone chargers such as for the L7,L6 slvr models, which was a bit of a relief as I am taking it on holiday at the weekend. You definitely need to upgrade the headphones though. Battery life is pretty good and it's very quick to recharge !
Zen Stone June 12, 2007 Mrs. J. Hardy 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I received my Zen Stone a couple of days ago and I absolutely love it! It's very easy to use with the software, which is downloaded from the Creative site. I ripped my favourite tracks from a number of albums and then transferred them to the stone using the drag and drop software. It was very easy and quick, and it would therefore be simple to change the tracks quite frequently - as obviously the storage is quite limited. I transferred about 200 tracks (at 128 bmp), some of wich were quite long. It is very simple to navigate to the different albums/folders using the button on the top. Once I have heard a second or two of a folder, I know whether its the one I'm looking for. I can then skip through the tracks using the buttons on the front. Obviously, it is nice to have a more sophisticated system for managing tracks, such as large Zen which sorts the tracks into album, genre, artist etc., but this isn't strictly necessary on a device which is designed to hold fewer tracks. I was a little dubious about it not having a screen, but have found that this really isn't a problem at all. The sound quality is excellent, and all in all I believe the Zen Stone represents excellent value for money.
