5 out of 5 stars Excellent as a skype only phone   November 2, 2006

I purchased this for business use thinking it was a dual phone i.e. use as skype phone and also plug into a landline as well. It's not :(

BUT - as a skype only phone it excels. The most surprising thing was the range. I walked all around a 10,000 sq ft warehouse with racking in place and reception was excellent. It only began to drop out when I walked to the furtherest end of the store (about 70m) that it became very patchy. The Cisco branded charging base station just adds to the feeling of reliability and quality. At this price ( 36) you will be very pleased.

Incidentally, if you are looking for a dual phone, the Siemens SL565 is just stunning, but at 100+ not suitable for warehouse use.

5 out of 5 stars Great once set up   December 29, 2006

We bought this after a friend had successfully purchased the same phone. So far its been great however the software that came with the phone wasn't up to date and we had some initial problems. Luckily a techno friend of ours was able to direct us to the Linksys site where we downloaded the latest software and reset it up. This could've been a hassel if we didn't have a friend who is a techo wiz as it wasn't immediately obvious that the problem was with the software, infact it appeared to be an issue with the base plate transmitter. You need to also download the latest Skype software to use it to best advantage with Skype. The line quality has much improved and its great to be able to see our contacts who are 'online' on the phone LCD display (however its very slow to scroll down through the contact list). The baseplate transmitter seems to have a good range meaning we can use the phone while walking around the house away from the computer. Good product.

A friend bought me the skype phone for an early Christmas present. I have to say, it far exceeds my expectations and I am thrilled with it. So much so, I have cancelled my BT phone line!

4 out of 5 stars Simple and effective Skype solution   November 23, 2005

I was impressed with the simplicity of the set up of this wireless DECT SKYPE phone from Linksys.

Open the box, and you get the handset, two rechargeable AAA batteries, a mains charger + plastic stand, a belt hook for the phone and a smallish USB box, about the size of a packet of cigarettes.

The handset is very lightweight, but the buttons are a good size and the LCD display's very reasonable. A better indication of when the phone's charging on its base would be nice, though.

As I already had a SKYPE account on my PC (if you don't the set-up on the CD prompts you through the download and install), the phone set up is really easy.

1. Insert the batteries into the phone and charge for 14 hours.
2. Run the CD to set up the simple software. (Don't plug in the USB device until you've installed the drivers - despite what the CD says).
3. When set up has finished, plug in the USB pack and it should be recognised.
4. (Again the CD makes no mention of this) Reboot your PC. Until I did this, I couldn't get the phone to work. Once I rebooted, the linksys phone app started, this in turn started Skype, and that was pretty much it.

Once the phone was connected and up and running, I could browse my Skype contacts, and also my Skype Out numbers on the phone's LCD screen. I could easily add new numbers from either the PC or the phone.

Call quality, both skype-skype (free) and skype-landline (just over 1p per minute) seemed good, and the range enabled me to go from one end of my flat to the other with no fizzing or loss of quality.

It would have been nice for this phone to also function on a normal subscriber line, especially for the price, and that's why it's lost a star from my rating, but if you've got broadband and want cheap (or in some cases free) phone calls, this appears to be a good product.
