It's Not A Mobile! April 19, 2007 Uncle Dave (Wiltshire UK) 37 out of 37 found this review helpful
I took umbrage with a magazine which reviewed this model and marked it down because of short battery life and the fact that it can't hook up to networks which need browser authentication. They were treating it as a possible mobile replacement and that's a job that it simply can't do. Apart from anything else, the open wireless infrastructure is too patchy to allow seamless accessibility. Think of where mobile phones were 20 years ago and that's where this is as far as on-the-go access is concerned. You could certainly carry it around with you so long as the networks you intend to access are either open or you know the keys, which rules out hotspots which usually require a browser which this doesn't have. The reason I bought it was to allow my wife to call me using Skype without having to switch on the PC. She's not a great fan of "silly computers" though she has come to terms with them over the years at work but loved using this. What it does is simple enough - it hooks up to your wireless network and allows you to make and receive Skype calls without having to turn on the PC. Think of it as being a cordless phone that uses Skype. The battery life is not great but that doesn't matter so long as you remember to connect it to charge when you're not using it. You also need to bear in mind that, like any VOIP connection, the quality of the call depends on a lot of factors because the call is routed via the internet. Working out of the country and spending a fortune on phone calls (you only realise how far the telecoms industry still has to go in terms of opening up competition when you see how exorbitant international rates remain) it was exactly what we needed. I've since bought a combined landline and Skype phone from Skype for use by my wife and taken this with me so now we can both make and receive Skype calls without the inconvenience of being at the computer. If you recognise it's limitations and spend enough on calls to make the purchase cost worthwhile then you won't be disappointed. It works straight out of the box, has the familiar Skype interface and does exactly what is claimed. Try and pretend it's something else - e.g. a mobile - then you will definitely be disappointed...
Skype WiFi phone - at last a perfect connection October 13, 2006 Andy Spanish (Bedford UK) 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
I received my SPH101 an hour ago and installed it into my wifi network by simply following the prompts on the handset. It located my network and prompted for the key (WPA-PSK) Then I logged on to my Skype account and it worked immediately. The call quality is superb. So much better than anything I've had using Skype through a PC. The handset is small but the keys are large enough to use and clearly marked. The display is very clear and bright. Calls using Skype-in/Out and Internet are all perfect. This product is not cheap but now that I no longer pay for land line rental it will pay for itself in a few months. (Keep a mobile around for emergency calls.) It is true Skype is only one of many VoIP suppliers now and they may have made a fatal mistake by not being compliant with the standards others have adopted but it works for me. The lack of browser interface for logging on to hotspots may be an issue when travelling. I can live with that. I must repeat... the call quality is better than I have ever had on any PC connected service.
Tremendous little gadget! October 23, 2006 Alan Russell (Kirkcaldy, Scotland) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I pre-ordered this months ago, and finally received it last week. I've got to say I'm delighted with it so far - it's so much easier than having to start up the PC every time I want to make a call, and also there is the obvious difference that a wireless handset makes. The handset is smaller than I expected, roughly the same size as a mobile phone, but despite being so small the screen is big enough for everything you need it to do, and the image is bright and crisp. Sound quality is as good as with a wired handset, and it seems to hold a strong signal. My only slight gripe is the ringtones - these are pretty horrible, and I've turned the volume down to the minimum as a result! I hope Netgear include new ringtones in a software update some time soon. This isn't enough to detract from a 5 star rating though, I thoroughly recommend this piece of kit to anyone who makes heavy use of Skype.
brilliant netgear phone October 17, 2006 Luis Labaton (uk) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
i have just received the netgear skype phone and its been on trial with me for 48 hours. Basically you can take it out of the box, log in to skype or sign up and away you go. Setting up the phone is just like any other mobile phone. I found the sound quality to be sharp and had no disconnections. Its brilliant and as I travel a lot the call charges will more than off set the cost of the product.
It was worth the wait! December 11, 2006 Frederick Orchard 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
Firstly, it has been reported that Battery life when new is only a day! True, but as with new mobile phones, the batteries this handset uses holds the charge just like a mobile phone. The issue with the log in also cured itself after a few days and it appears to be directly related to the battery. Now down to the phone - It's great, it really is. Note that the price is dropping as is the norm with something as new and innovative as this. The quality of the call is excellent whether calling to a computer or to a landline. All our friends are really impressed and I know those with a wireless router are ordering a similar handset. Finally I concur with the ring tone comment. I guess this will be fixed soon.
