Initially, I had problems with the Tom Tom Home software due to my inexperience. Eventually I had to resort to the Customer Support Team (twice) and they sorted me out promptly with expert advice. After that, I got the device installed in my car and it performed perfectly. In my opinion it is a brilliant piece of kit giving clear and precise directions and showing me where the dreaded speed traps were in plenty of time. I have no hesitation on recommending the Tom Tom One XL GB to anyone who, like me, used to habitually get lost.

Bought this after trying a mates Tom Tom GO and liked it, so thought I`d treat myself. Bought this one because of the larger widescreen display and very pleased with it. I must admit I didnt use the suppied CD but downloaded the software from the TOM TOM site with no problem. Backed up the SD card on to the PC and downloaded `important` updates again without a problem. A common problem a lot of people seem to have is the windscreen mount, I dont know if its just the car I have but when on the windscreen, the bottom of the unit rests on the top of the dash making it very secure and vibration free. Navigation has been (so far) perfect, it will even tell you which lane to get in to when aproching a junction plus an abundence of other info like the nearest petrol station, resturant, cash machine, police station etc etc even down to the nearest dentist, well, you never know. Overall an excellent bit of kit.

I purchased the TomTom XL GB version, this is an excellent GPS System for the price, I have always found that the TomTom navigation better than other makes that I have tested. The big plus is the size of the screen, also it is slim for being able to carry in your pocket or bag. I highly recommend this unit, also it is very simple to use and to set-up.
i LOVED IT December 28, 2007 G. Donohoe (uk) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought this after taking back an appalling RAC unit and exchanging it for this TOM TOM, here is my review on the RAC unit vs the TOM TOM RAC Unit..... Does it come with a little stylus you are bound to lose?; if it does then its a probably badly designed silly product that won't have been properly thought out, and indeed that is what this unit is. Never mind that it did not even work when I got it home, repeating over and over again, "calculating route" and flashing its screen through all its pages - all products can have faulty units now and again. No,the real problem is that in almost every aspect of its design and implementation it shows that it does not have any, design that is. The box is cheap, it comes with a cigarette lighter socket charger cable but no means to charge it in the home, suggesting you leave it to charge in the car so some local scally can pick up a fully charged one to sell on ebay. Its touch screen is too small and too slapdash to work well even IF you dont lose the stylus. You are supposed to calibrate it, after you have you get a message saying "press enter button to accept, exit to cancel" but no buttons are displayed!! This kind of dead end and clear lack of end user testing of any kind sums up the unit. Its windscreen sucker attachment seems robust enough but is massively overengineered compared to the elegant ball joint solution used by TOMTOM. It does seem to have a longer battery life (3 hours claimed) than the TOM TOM ONE XL I swapped it for (2 hours). The TOM TOM meanwhile oozes quality and confidence from the minute you open its box, quality packaging makes for a better consumer experience, little things like a screen protector to peel off show they have thought this product through. It comes with a car charger AND a USB cable to connect it to the Internet and charge it at the same time. (The RAC one will charge through a USB cable too I think but there is nothing about it in the naff, badly designed, faintly printed documentation) The TOMTOM worked straight out of the box and navigated me to a lunch appointment with clear well displayed instructions. You can select from a range of voices and languages and download more if you want them... for 4 you can choose premium voices like John Cleese or Sven. It works, no question and using it was fun and easy, it will make me a safer driver. The voice instructions are clear, easy to follow and repeated at exactly the right momens. t even guessed when I switched it back on after lunch that we would want to go home and started directing us there, incredible! The internet updates are easy and the software intuitive, elegant and very user friendly. The whole thing is a triumph of good design which always endears me to a product. Oh and the speed camera warnngs worked great , at least around guildford. Nice thing is you can also set it to warn you if you are exceeding the speed limit regardless of whether there are cameras which is useful if like me you occasionally drift up, and it does not go offall the time and you can switch it off anyway, so perfect. You can even have it warn you if you are near a school, another genuine safety feature. I'd recommend the widescreen versions of these things too, that little extra screen space makes reading it and operating the touch screen so muh easier. No stupid stylus with the TOMTOM either. TOM TOM was 30 dearer than the RAC model and worth every extra penny. TOM TOM XL Great product.
A terribly useful bit of kit! May 16, 2008 Mr. J. Welsh (Yorkshire, England) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this about 2 weeks ago as I am having to drive more than I used to for work. We've tested it a few times lately and found it to be very useful. The maps are clear, easy to read and the display is informative and clear. It is also very easy to programme with a new location (especially so as I tend not to read manuals!). The additional features, such as ways to avoid hold ups and are also very useful. We live in a very rural area but despite this, we've had no issues with loss of signal or misdirections. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who needs a Sat nav system.
