5 out of 5 stars Would I recommend a Zire 21? Definately.   February 13, 2004

This is my first handheld. I had looked at them before, but the prlce had put me off. When I saw a prlce of less than 70 I decided to give it a try. I have not been disappointed. This is a great buy. It does not have the fancy features of the Zire 71 or the Tungsten E, but it does all the basics. I have been using a ring-binder organizer for years to keep schedules, agendas, notes and contacts, but I needed an A4 binder, over 1" thick and I still had to archive notes to a separate ring binder. Now I can do it all in an organizer small and light enough to fit into a shirt pocket. Despite being lightweight, it has a solid feel. It looks good and is easy to use. The best part is the ability to attach notes to contacts and meetings, to record your agenda and record outcomes etc. Then finding them again is simple, no need to keep an extensive filing system, just use find function. All that, and plenty of memory for extra applications that you can download from the internet for $15-25.

It does have some drawbacks. The screen needs good lighting to see it easily, and the handwriting recognition takes some getting used to. The screen protector is moulded rubber and seems a little flimsy. Be aware that synchronizing with your Mac/PC requires up-to-date software; you need at least Mac OS 9.1.

But, would I recommend a Zire 21? Definately.

Exactly what I was looking for.....basic Diary & Address book..plus I bought an eWallet program to store bank details, passwords etc.
Black & White screen is fine, battery last over 2 weeks with average use (perfect for taking on holiday).
Had it 4 months so far without any problems at all.
Good purchse

5 out of 5 stars Do you want a simple organizer for your Apple Mac?   June 1, 2004

Look no further. The Zire 21 synchronises well with my iMac, in particular with Address Book and iCal, but you would need to operate Mac OS 10.3 and download iSynch 1.4 and iSynch Palm Conduit. (And maybe update your iCal). I have been using iCal for some time and bought the Zire 21 later, so it was a treat that iCal and Date Book, and Addresses on the Palm could be synchronised so easily. Both iCal and Date Book (part of the palm software) display reminders and alarms on my desktop which is helpful. However, it is advisable not to upgrade the palm software 4.1 which comes with the Zire 21, because when I did exactly that, I had trouble synchronising with iSynch . If you like all your contacts on the move, plus a good calendar function with alarm, and maybe want to make some notes, the Zire 21 is all you need, with all your data safely stored on your computer. So far I haven't used the Graffiti 2 on the palm to make notes, you will get away with the on screen keyboard which is easier to use.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Budget PDA   April 29, 2004

Since buying my Zire 21 people delight in telling me that I should havegot the xxxx with camera, colour screen, mp3 player, golf cart etc etc
I wanted to spent under 100 on a basic PDA to use as mainly as anorganizer as I do a lot of travelling. Its very easy to use, small andlight enough to out in a pocket and forget about and the battery seems togo on and on. It does everything I want it to do and more. I'll spend themoney I saved buying the Zire 21on a digital camera and an mp3player....

4 out of 5 stars Limited features but good value   September 21, 2004

The Zire 21 is a digital Filofax, nothing more, and will happily keep all your appointments and contacts as well as back them up on your PC. It's small, light and stylish, and does its job. However, beyond that it falls down due to its un-backlit monochrome screen and small memory, which will not be enough for most applications or PDA games. Nevertheless, it is good for carrying eBooks, which don't need colour, but I think the best value PDA on the market would not be the 21, but the Zire 31. For 40 more, you get twice the memory, a bright, backlit colour screen and multimedia functionality. Above all, the Zire 31 features an expansion slot, which is actually enough to carry entire CDs worth of music. And perhaps importantly, if you get bored of your Palm as a diary, the 31 offers that little bit more you can do with it.
