4 out of 5 stars Does What it Says on the Tin   August 25, 2004

Having given a (first generation) IPAQ back to my old work place last year, I had to buy my own PDA. The Zire 31 is cheap, has a good processor, room for memory cards and plays MP3s. So all in all it is what I wanted.

However, why am I not so enthused? Well, the display is lower resolution than expected, even lower than my old IPAQ; I feel I have not moved forward enough. However, this is it's only flaw, as its battery life is very good, it has the usual palm programs, and runs PALM HIARCS CHESS very well!!

Buy the Zire 31 if you really don't need bluetooth, a camera, a draining pocket pc, and need to watch the pennies!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent value so nearly perfect but??   November 30, 2004

Ive had mine for six months now and have been very impressed with it. Good points are : superb battery never needs charging its that good, mine even charges itself from the usb port if I leave it plugged in!! mp3 playback is great with decent headphones i.e Sony 20 quid plus jobbies!! volume is too low without them. Never hangs or crashes unlike some other Palms I had and heard about.
Bad points are: only one thing that is the calulator is too slow i.e. it dosent respond quickly enough when inputting figures etc for some reason, and also the new Graffiti 2 system of handwriting recognition is slow to respond to your input, for some reason it does not immediately write what you write (if you follow me?)
All in all though I can thouroughly recommend this pda invest in a large sd card and you have mega mp3 capability that is so much better than carting a stand alone player round with you.
below 100 quid now !! get yourself one you will not regret this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Zire 31 - good piece of kit   August 18, 2004

This is my first PDA, and I will admit I was/am unsure how much use this thing will get. It's fantastic! The colour screen is great, the text input is easy with the character recognition, it plays a great game of billiards and, yes, solitaire, it's easy to set up and use. I would like to see more memory, what it has soon fills up if you start adding all the extra software. It certainly won't disappoint, though.

Personally, I'd check out the Tungsten E, simply for the extra memory. Any extra features would probably be wasted on me, as this thing does everything I need it to.

The operating system is excellent, don't be put off by the small screen area - it's quite ample. The supplied software is good, I don't have Outlook so I can't comment on it's compatibility with that. Battery life seems pretty good.
