Still performing well after one year May 7, 2007 Dave M (Hampshire, England) 49 out of 49 found this review helpful
This is my fourth Palm over the years and, after one year now, I can safely say that it is the best by far. The WiFi capability is reliable and very easy to use, both with my home wireless router and also with commercial services like the BTOpenzone and also with hotel hotspots. The only down is that the flip cover for the screen (supplied instead of the more usual case) is rubbish. I strongly suggest buying a leather case for it. The only other items you might want to buy are a cradle and an SD card. Go for a card of at least 1Gbyte and you can then use TCPMP to play videos on the Palm (it's also easy to convert your home DVDs into the right format for viewing while on a flight or the such like). Please note that you cannot make a 4Gbyte card work in this model and the work-arounds supplied on various websites do not work. I had a very frustrating time re-building the operating system from scratch. It was my own stupid fault trying to replace the SD card driver, and ending up with a device that wouldn't boot. If you are considering putting in a 4Gbyte card the only advice that I can give you is - DON'T.... The new input with Graffiti is a great improvement over the previous models in that you can now see your key strokes and, as a result, I now make far fewer data entry mistakes. After one year, the input was becoming a little bit iffy, however putting on a decent screen protector would have stopped the very localised damage to my screen. I have since bought screen protectors, and suggest that they are a worthwhile option to improve the longevity of this device. I have read bad things in other reviews about the browser, but mine seems to be working fine, although it cannot handle very complex webpages and automatic re-direction. In essense you are getting something very akin to IE5 in terms of capability. If you want something that is a serious business tool, but can provide some of the nice things in life such as doubling as an MP3 player, then this has to be the right choice.
Palm TX now supports LEAP, PEAP for Wi-Fi! January 23, 2007 Russell (United Kingdom) 43 out of 43 found this review helpful
I have had the Palm TX for quite a while now, and I love it! The features are great, MP3 player is really good, Documents to Go very impressive, and the lanscape, portrait view is just priceless. Watchin movies and video clips on it works great, just requires some converting from your DVD to a smaller format. Oh and buy a 1 gb card and good headphones, their so cheap nowadays. Like some of its other users however I was AT FIRST disappointed that there was no advanced Wi-Fi support such as LEAP and PEAP for business wireless networks which require more advanced authentication methods. I had to make do with connecting to the wireless network via a VPN client, which did the job, but I would much rather connect without having to use a VPN client (which is not included in the original software btw). But now! Low and behold, Palm has released an update for the Palm TX which adds those much needed Wi-Fi features. Just search google for "Palm TX Wi-Fi Enterprise Security Update" The only downside is that you need to pay for it, but its only about $6 or so, and buying from palm using a UK debit card worked fine. In the end, its not much extra to pay, and its something that actually makes your Palm TX 10x better. Hope this info helps, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Knocks spots off a PocketPC February 14, 2006 63 out of 64 found this review helpful
After a bad experience with a PocketPC which was very slow and did not sync up well with Outlook in my opinion I had pretty much given up on PDAs. However, I decided to try again and with the Palm TX I have certainly not regretted the choice. This is a brilliant device with good battery life, excellent WiFi (including secure access points) and easy to use software. The DocumentsToGo software does a good job of synching with Outlook although the Excel sheets are a bit hard to read or require a lot of scrolling - you take a choice here. Web use is excellent through the WiFi connection and sites, such as the BBC News site are really usable - surprising for such a small handheld device. The only downside, if you can call it that, is the downloadable games which are pretty addictive. This is particularly true of Bejeweled 2 which is brilliant and certainly shows the colour display capabailites off to good effect. For anyone thinking of buying a PDA which is easy to use, has good battery life and an excellent set of features then I would recommend the Palm TX.
Great little device January 9, 2006 Thomas J. Ward (Hampshire, UK) 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
After receiving the device I charged it for 3 hours and then hot synced my data to it. I have read on the Internet that people had problems with this; it worked first with Outlook 2003. Also I have bluetooth on my laptop and after discovering the Palm via my laptop and then creating a Hotsync conduit on my Palm it worked via Bluetooth seamlessly.Wireless is also very good but I would like to see LEAP support for office use, but WPA-PSK is a welcome treat. The buttons are a little suspect but if you give then a good press then everything works well. The power button is a pain but I'm using the application button to power on (normal use drives this) so it's not a problem. The screen is excellent and very clear, it's much better and I had expected. Documents-To-Go is amazing, it really makes Pocket PC Mini Word, Excel, and PowerPoint look totally useless. Just browse your file system and right click documents to copy them over the Palm.
Excellent for documents, internet and mp3s January 12, 2006 N. O'CONNOR (London) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I am very pleased with this PDA. I primarily bought it to edit Microsoft Office documents on the move. The ‘documents to go’ software is excellent, I find it more user friendly than the slimed down Microsoft versions on my old PDA. Having recently bought a wireless router for my home computer I am also very impressed with the WiFi & Bluetooth functionality. The T|X was SO much easier to connect than my home computer and the ability to rotate the screen to landscape in combination with the versatile browser means I can happily surf the internet from any point in the house. The MP3 player appears to be well thought out and happily replaces a separate unit in my pocket. The calendar and other functions all appear to be of a good standard, however I do not use it to sync with my outlook and so cannot comment on its capability in this area. Overall I am very impressed, even more so considering the relatively low price.
