Amazon.co.uk Review The Cassiopeia EM-500, Casio's follow-up to its E-100 series of personal digital assistants, closely mirrors the E-125 but offers a few changes. The biggest change is the move to using MultiMediaCard (MMC) memory over the more standard CompactFlash memory slot. The postage stamp-size MMC cards offer needed memory expandability (as the EM-500 comes with only 16 MB of internal memory, compared to the 32 MB of the E-125), especially if you plan to use the EM-500 as a portable MP3 player--one of its many multimedia capabilities. While MMC over CompactFlash limits the ability of the EM-500 to use many Pocket PC peripherals, it is likely you will be willing to overlook that once you get a peek at the EM-500's gorgeous TFT screen. This very bright, very colourful (65,536 colours, to be exact) display shines beautifully when you are playing games or watching mobile video player clips, which run along at a respectable 15 to 20 frames per second with the EM-500's 150 MHz MIPS processor. The thick EM-500 (about twice the thickness of the Palm Vx) offers standard Casio programmable buttons to bring up the menu, calendar and contacts, as well as a navigational D-pad, which is great for gaming. In addition to functioning as a stereo MP3 player (when using the included headphones), the EM-500 also works as a voice recorder, allowing you to dictate reminders for yourself or voice messages to send with e-mail. Casio promises six hours of battery life, but we often were able to get seven or more as long as we left the backlight on medium brightness. With its IrDA port, the EM-500 can communicate with wireless devices, and its USB connection provides speedy data transfer--even installing programs larger than a megabyte takes only a few seconds. Despite the limited memory and the lack of CompactFlash support, the powerful processor, excellent display and long battery life make the EM-500 a competitive entry into the Pocket PC market. --J. Great PDA January 21, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've played with this little baby for a while, and I have to say, I'm impressed, great screen, sound and speed. Admittedly the memory is a bit lacking, but add the price of a 32mb MMC card, and it is still less expensive than the comparable iPAQ 36xx and E-125, MMC Memory is great for running games or apps from, I run Doom4CE from my memory card with no problems. If you are going to need to use things like network cards and 1 gb microdrives, buy an E-125 or something. OK, the EM-500 may not be Ideal for the mobile proffesional, because of the lack of expansion slots, but it's not aimed at them. Overall, it's a godsend (but factor in getting at least a 32mb memory card).
Brilliant Unit - A good all rounder May 15, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Em500 is an excellent unit, especially if you can get it at a good price. The excelent screen is a real plus although it can not be used in direct sunlight. One downer is the 16mb of system memeory it is hard to keep to this limit, however mmc cards have come down in price so storage is not a problem. The range of software for the MIPs processor is also impressive and with the built in microsoft software makes this product good value. One handy utility I have found is Peacemaker by conduits software and allows Palm PC's to talk via infrared port to the pocket PC.
great buy January 31, 2001 I think the casio is a great buy, for a pocket pc i use it at school taking notes and for games and mp3's.the screen is great the colour is really good.if you are going to buy one it would be wise to buy a 32mb mmc card.buy one!
This thing rocks!! April 8, 2001 After previously using Palm OS based machines, I was a bit sceptial about getting one based on Windows CE 3.0 - However, I am now SO glad I bought a Cassiopeia EM-500 as it is quite simply the best PDA I have ever used!
Fantastic April 20, 2001 John (Edinburgh, Scotland) I absolutely love this. I never got used to my old Palm. It just didn't suit the way my mind works,it was black and white and you couldn't hear the buzzer - hence the reminder function was useless. But the EM500 is a revelation! It is everything the Palm isn't. You can hear reminders loud and clear. The tasks (todo) list actually works for me. You can store a whole album on it and plug in a pair of headphones! And the screen! And the build quality! Buy one of these and a 32Mb MMC card and you're happy as Larry (and he's a happy man).
