Brilliant! June 24, 2008 Sara Chung (SF, CA) 57 out of 69 found this review helpful
What if the ones you loved and cherished the most suddenly just vanished? No good bye, no reason why, one minute they are there and the next they are not. This is the question explored by Barclay in this wonderfully weird and spooky novel. When teenager Cynthia Archer awakes to find her entire family has disappeared (Dad, Mom and younger brother) and must face the next 25 years wondering how, why? Was she left behind or spared? Then she agrees to be interviewed for a TV documentary that is exploring the old case, still searching for clues. Will some one remember something or maybe he Mom, Dad or brother will finally reach out to her. Then she receives something in the mail that makes her wonder if she has made the right decision to pursue this mystery. This is a great story, with plenty of chills but it is also very well written. Along with "Misfits Country" (stunning portrayal of a fictional Marilyn Monroe!) this is my favorite read so far this year.
Kept me going right to the end. June 22, 2008 SJSmith (UK) 22 out of 32 found this review helpful
I was gripped from the outset with this book and when I came to post my review I was surprised by such a mixture of reviews. I'd like to have given it 4.5 stars but as that's not an option, 5 it is. A really fast thriller that is truly entertaining. Such an amazing concept for a story line and because I really did want to know what was going to happen I would've had to have kept reading even if I wasn't enjoying it. All the characters are extremely well written in the novel. I liked the relationship between Cythia and her husband Terry. It was interesting to see how he dealt with everything that had happened before meeting Cynthia, something that he had lived through, via her, for as long as they had been together. The action kept me hooked, granted there were predictable bits, and naturally some parts weren't as well-written as others. However, overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. It had everything a good thriller needs and there were bits where my heart was racing. I do wish I'd had time to read this one from cover to cover, as I do with some others; it just wasn't possible on this occasion. 'No Time for Goodbye' is easy to read and the chapters are reasonable length. There are places where you might get restless but the action soon starts up again. There's a spot about 3/4 of the way through where it became tedious, it's something that Cynthia does and I just thought to myself, "no, this wouldn't happen" but I just carried on and I'm pleased I did. I'd had this book on my shelves for a while and was prompted to get it down as I like to follow the 'Richard & Judy' summer book club. No doubt this book will receive lots of publicity now but deservedly so as it's a great read. Enjoy!
could barclay be the new coben? July 6, 2008 butter_bean_bookworm (england, uk) 8 out of 13 found this review helpful
I'm a fanatical reader and am careful with what I pick up and put in my hands. 'No time for goodbye' is probably the only book I've read since I was 13 that I finished in one sitting. I started the book mid afternoon on Saturday the 5th of July and finished it at 6am the next morning. To say I was hooked would be a great understatement. Many reviewers will comment on the quick grab at the beginning of this book, but I found that not only was it consistent in the suspense but at the end of each chapter there was another unexpected twist. I'm surprised to have read that a reader accused this book of being a cliche, may I add that a cliche it is not but simply an incredibly well developed plot that has you on the edge of seat from start to finish. As a fan of Harlan Coben and only recently completing 'the woods' I was still in a very good place with crime reading and eagerly awaited the arrival of 'No time for goodbye' in paperback. I was not left disappointed. The plot is clear from the outset. Cynthia Bigge at only 14 wakes up one morning to find herself with the hangover from hell. An argument broke out the night before and screamed out to her parents that she wished they were dead; nothing could have prepared her for what happened next. The only sound she could hear was those of her footsteps, frantically banging on her neighbours door asking the whereabouts of her family and so the conspiracy begins. With the house swamped with cops and TV channels at the ready Cynthia's life will never be the same. 25 years on married and with a daughter, Grace, her husband Terry narrates the story. Having had to deal with the loss of her family the doubt in her mind damages her to the point of putting her family at risk. Paranoia consumes this family, so much so that every sound, every face becomes a lost member trying to contact her. Who can she trust? Terry has started to doubt his wife what with that note and her father's hat suddenly appearing after 25 years on their kitchen table. She was in the kitchen for a while; I mean how long does it take to take an Advil and get the shoebox box of memories? She was gone quiet some time. And what about that note typed up on Terry's typewriter? Is it a coincidence or was someone really in the house that night? When the private detective they hire suddenly goes missing and Cynthia's aunt Tess found brutally murdered the breakdown in trust takes a turn for the worst and Cynthia takes 8 year old Grace and hits the road without a trace. Terry finds himself reliving Cynthia's life waking up to an empty house without a hint of life. But there is a note. Terry isn't prepared to sit around and wait for them to come back, that's if they come back. Terry retraces the work of the detective and finds that retracing the past is no easy task. If you start asking for people who don't want to be found, you may find yourself on dangerous territory. I'll leave it there purely because any more said will start to unravel the ending don't expect the obvious because you will be surprised with the outcome. A defiant read, with evidence he is a well developed author with a knack for suspense, thriller and hardcore crime.

What a story! Utterly gripping, getting weirder and spookier with every chapter. A brilliant page turner with some colourful characters. I couldn't put it down!
