I found this book to be very invaluable. Some people may not agree but I really think that all the sections in this book for the UKCAT test are very helpful. The 2007 edition is written informally, and to be honest some of the things mentioned just makes you want to laugh out loud. It may not gurantee me a place to medischool, but knowing that Iam armed with the knowledge of how to tackle the UKCAT test, and with information from the medical school interview books, am confident enough that I will not panic. Also, for anyone who is taking the UKCAT test, go to the website and ukcat website and check the sample questions, they are set exactly the same way (or similar0 to the ones you will carry out. Good Luck on your exams.

This is a comprehensive guide to two UK medical school entry tests, UKCAT and BMAT. The first part of the book contains key dates, guidance about entry to medical school and how to prepare the application. The second and third parts contain guidance, examples and practice aptitude tests for the UKCAT and BMAT exams. Part I gives good advice although this type of advice is also found in other UK medical school entry books. The best parts of the book are to be found in the Parts II and III ( the UKCAT and BMAT sections) as they are modelled on the material to be used in the two tests.Particularly useful are the detailed explanations for the practice examples and the practice tests as well as the strategies which can be used in preparing for these tests. The logical steps provided to help think through the answers are also very good. The section on decision analysis is unique to this book and as such will be very useful to students taking the UKCAT test.
It would have been helpful to include some blank answer sheets for the practice tests and a summary only of correct answers on an answer sheet in addition to the detailed explanations. It would be also useful in future editions to give some attention to how best to approach timed online tests as well as some current links to online aptitude tests.
All in all, this will prove a very useful adjunct to anyone taking these tests.

I disagree with the first reviewer - its called the 2007 edition for a reaspn. Before I bought my copy, I started off using one from our library and it is quite different, for example the 2007 version has a new section on the new 'non-cognitive' part of the test. It's also a lot "chunkier" than last years book. I have found it very useful so far, and it has helped me approach the UKCAT feeling a lot more confident. I would recommend this book

This guide covers both the UKCAT and BMAT tests. I highly reccomend you buy this book if you are going to be sitting these tests, it gives many examples of the kind of questions you will encounter but more importantly teaches you step by step how to approach and think through the questions in a logical way.
Obviously, such a book will not tell you all the answers but it does tell you how to prepare yourself for the exam and gives good advice on besting misleading questions and other pitfalls.
A must have for medics!

I'm currently in my second year of A-Levels, and managed to find the time to use this book for about an hour per day in the weeks leading up to my UKCAT. Come test day, despite my nerves I was able to get an average of 745/900 over all the sections - higher than most undergraduates!
About the UKCAT section:
The mini-tests contained within this book contain questions which get progressively harder until they reach the point where they're harder than those you get in the actual test. Once you're able to answer the final questions correctly and confidently, you know you've mastered the very techniques at the heart of the section, and can move on.
The walkthroughs after each mini-test were the biggest help to me personally - the answers to every question and rationale behind them are given, which enable you to understand *why* your answers were correct or not.
The sections preceeding the UKCAT and BMAT guides are also brilliant. The personal statement section was particularly helpful, and there is also information regarding all aspects of your application in general - crucial knowledge.
However, and this is important, *DO NOT* buy this book for its BMAT section - you're much better off getting The Official Guide to the BMAT (which can also be found on this site).
In conclusion - buy this book. Almost all medical school applicants will be applying to at least one school requiring the UKCAT, and for that this book is vital. The additional information is a very good aide, and the BMAT section at least serves as a supplement to any other material you choose to use.
