When training to be a teacher it's tempting to focus on teaching skills and neglect subject knoweldge. But the two are interlinked. The better you know your subject - the more confident you will be in the classroom. This book covers everything from basic arithmetic to trig. Each chapter includes summaries and questions - to help you make sure that everything has sunk in. A great book - especially for anyone who's last real experience of maths was age 16!
Helped me with maths September 17, 2001 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was a Primary PGCE student last year and this not only helped me with revision for my course but it is still giving me assistance in my preparation for lessons now that I am a teacher.

Wow! Of all the primary mathematical books available to assist in subject knowledge, this has to be one of the best. All the information is linked to the standards that have to be met before QTS can be achieved. It is easy to read, contains references to research material and self assessment activities.
An excellent book which aims to increase subject knowledge February 13, 2001 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book is highly recommended for trainee teachers aiming to achieve QTS. It has been written to develop mathematical subject knowledge required for teaching the National curriculum and Numeracy Strategy. It is therefore ideally aimed at trainee students from a non mathematical discipline. It sucessfully tackles the importance of childrens misconceptions and highlights through examples the importance of concise subject knowledge essentially required by the trainee. The book cotains useful self audits which help to test your mathematical understanding as you progress through the chapters.
