An excellent and really helpful book for AS and A level January 2, 2002 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is a great book. It is very clear and helpful with lots and lots of worked examples and good diagrams. I find it easier to understand than my teacher. The sections on Revision and exam techniques are good too. I feel a lot surer about Physics now. Stacey W
it's a difficult subject-what did you expect! July 8, 2003 M. J. Stott (UK) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
A well rounded physics book for advanced level and also an attractive book. Some physics books are a little daunting on the eyes (especially the non-colour ones)and some books are overtly splattered in luminous colours eventually throwing you off as you admire the pretty colours....but this book, well it was just right. Although the information context and layout is a very important feature of any text book, I feel that the way a book is illustrated and displayed is important too and this book has perfect combination of colour, contrast, consistency and most importantly easy to undersatnd physical complexity. Simple, Attractive, and still managing to be a good textbook October 19, 2005 Alex Wheatley (Stevenage, England) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I have just started AS Physics (AQA B), and already this book has been massively useful. The book actually came from my girlfriend, who had just finished AS Physics, and was not carying it on. I read various bits of it, out of interest, over the summer, and was amazed at how much it prepared me for the course! As has been mentioned in previous reviews, the diagrams make a nice comprimise between being easy on the eye and understandable, while not being too distracting. There is a slight comic feel to some of the exemples, as the same 'person' (a cartoon character called Fizz) is used for all of the examples. I can't give personal feedback on what it's like to revise from (although my aforementioned girlfriend went from a predicted E to a solid C with this book), but I would definitely advise this book to anyone studying AS/A2 physics! Oh, and the tick-boxes in the back are very useful. They tell you exactly which parts (quoted as pages in the book) are needed for each year of each exam board - you'd be surprised at the differences!!

This is a good general physics text book that aims to cover the core topics of all examination boards. It provides information on which chapters are relevent to each specification and those which are gernerally A2 level are highlighted. The website that accompanies the book also has full annotated specifications with the relevent page numbers for each learning objective. The book is divided into topic areas and chapeters. Each chapter is then clearly laid out with new ideas empasised in sub headings and important facts and formulas in boxes. Each chapter has a summary at the end as well as questions to check your understanding and progress. Further questions are provided at the end of each topic area. Questions follow the format of exam questions and full answers are provided in the back. Ideas are clearly explained with good use of colour photographs and diagrams. Mathamatical ideas are presented and explained well and aimed at the non mathematician. Worked examples are also given. Applications of physics are given their own separate section at the end of each chapter helping to show the relevance of physics to modern life and the variety of applications that are not possible without it. Advice is also provided on study skills, examination technique and practical work. This is clear and points out many common pit falls. In conclusion this is a good all round text book that will stretch more able students without being inaccesible to less able students. It covers a wide variety of specifications in a lively and informative way. It is a must for all A level physicists!
