Truly magical November 15, 2004 35 out of 36 found this review helpful
I loved the Gruffalo, but have to disagree with those who felt that the sequel was somehow lacking in magic. The Gruffalo's child is truly wonderful, with a great story, lovely use of language and absolutely incredible illustrations. I actually preferred it to the original in some ways, particularly because I felt that 'bold' children (of whom I know several!) would identify with the child in this book - seeking adventure and finding a little more than she bargained for! For those who haven't read it yet - the Gruffalo's child has grown up with stories of the Big Bad Mouse, and sneaks off to see if he really exists.
My 2 year old loved it January 7, 2006 s (Northern Ireland) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
My 2 year old boy sat and let me read him this book (usually he only likes the pictures and wont listen to the words, but he delighted in this one) and was able to tell the story back to me in his own little words. That was a first for us. Good book.
Satisfying sequel to Children's Classic September 9, 2004 36 out of 38 found this review helpful
I couldn't wait to snap this up when I saw that there was a new title in the Gruffalo series. The first book ("The Gruffalo") is a true classic and I think I enjoy reading it to my daughter just as much as she enjoys listening to it and joining in. The style of the Gruffalo's Child is similar and the same characters appear (snake, owl, fox and mouse). The tale of the big bad mouse has become a Gruffalo legend so the Gruffalo's child decides to go go looking for him in the deep dark wood.Written in the same rhyming style and with the same fantastic illustrations, this book is sure to delight adults and children. Maybe not quite as cool as the first book but still worth every penny of the asking price. Buy it - you won't regret it (and the kids might like it too!)
Grrrrrrr May 22, 2006 Matthew Zipfel (UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
What a fabulous book. One line towards the end doesn't ring with me, but as the children love it, it's brilliant!
Everything you'd hoped for if you loved the Gruffalo March 2, 2005 ELH Browning (Kingston Bagpuize, Oxon) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
As you'd expect from Julia Donaldson, this is a rollicking good read with the usual standard of rhythm and rhyme. If you've loved the gruffalo then you and your children will be delighted with the sequel. At first reading I thought it wasn't quite as good as The Gruffalo - however, with time I think it probably is. We love the idea that the snake, the fox and the owl have realised the mouse's original game and enjoy their re-use of the same trick but this time it's gruffalo dishes that each talks about as the Gruffalo's Child tries to track down the legendary Big Bad Mouse. Then the mouse uses his shadow to create a great big version of himself. Axel Scheffer's illustrations are great as always, and I particularly like the little stick man 'cuddly' the Gruffalo's Child always carries, the mouse's SnowGruffalo and the little mouse quietly eating his nut at THE END. Fantastic.
