5 out of 5 stars Another Cracking Tale of Paul Temple   November 28, 2008

Another classic installment from the Paul Temple series expertly read by Anthony Head. There are the usual tense moments - car crashes, getting trapped in a room flooding with water and the story (as usual!) kept me guessing who the villain of the piece was, right until the last moment. A 'must-have' for all Temple fans out there, young and old! Enjoy :-)

This is a well written and polished story which gives full flavour to the times of the 40's & 50's detective genre.

In this story Paul Temple and his wife Steve have just arrived back from America to find that the leading lady in Paul's new play has withddrawn from the part. Iris Archer insists that she must go to the South of France for a few months and so won't be able to open in the play. Paul talks her round promising that the plays opening can be delayed and all are happy again.

Paul and Steve then leave for a holiday in Scotland. On the way they stop for directions to their planned overnight stay in a small village a few miles from their destination. While there Paul is approached by a young man who asks him to deliver a letter to a John Richmond at their intended hotel but to only give the letter to him!. Upon leaving the village they are stopped by two men claiming to be the young man's father and doctor asking for the letter back as they claim he is disturbed. Paul tricks them and he and Steve leave the village.

On arriving at their destination they find that John Richmond is actually their friend Sir Graham Forbes of Scotland Yard, Iris Archer is here not in the South of France but in Scotland and that they have landed in the middle of an intrigue concerning secret weapons and international espionage. As attempts are made upon them and the bodies start to pile up it's up to Paul Temple to solve the mystery and unmask the leader codenamed Z4.

This is a good production, as with most BBC audio items it is good quality with clear sound. I own other items both single read and full cast productions from BBC audio and always find them excellent.

Anthony Head is very good and brings all of the chracters to life with his reading of the story.

Strangely enough I had recently picked up a Paul Temple audio story in my local book shop the other monthly and contemplated buying it. I will now definitely purchase some more to perk up the walk to and from work on these dreary winter days.

5 out of 5 stars The amazing voice of Anthony Head   December 24, 2008

News of Paul Temple is an exciting adventure mystery of the kind that doesn't quite reach the intellectual heights of Conan Doyle, or the panache of Agatha Christie or Dorothy L Sayers. Car crashes, explosions, poisonings, shootings, death by fire and by drowning are just some of the dangers the intrepid hero Paul Temple faces as he (without intending to become involved) brings down the most sophisticated espionage ring in Europe.

The original Paul Temple -- which my parents enjoyed as teenagers -- was a full cast production, in the glory days of radio before television was widely available. This audio book is read and narrated by a single actor -- which might seem like a bit of a disappointment, until you actually listen to it.

Anthony Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Little Britain, Merlin, Spooks, and many other roles) demonstrates utter mastery of one person narration. After about five minutes, you basically forget that you're listening to a reading, because Head does all of the characters with different voices, including the most perfect Dutch accent that I've ever heard from a non-Dutch speaker. Alongside Cockney, Scots and the inevitable Austrian-German, he gives us a range of characters (men and women) whose voices are instantly memorable, but not for any particularly obvious reason (in other words, just like real people).

This is an extraordinary achievement, and the whole thing is carried off without any sound effects or music, except for the opening and closing titles.

As a script, News of Paul Temple isn't quite high art, but it's a jolly good example of its own genre, and pretty much perfect in its own terms. With Anthony Head's reading, what could have been a rather poor cost saving measure elevates it to something more than it might have been.

For a little nostalgia, or just for a stomping 1930s style thriller, this is warmly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB.............................   December 23, 2008

Fans of Paul Temple will not be disappointed with this CD. Paul is asked by a famous actress to write a play for her. Just as it is ready to go into production, she backs out on the pretence of going to the Riviera.
Paul and his wife Steve set off on holiday to Scotland and then the fun begins. They end up in the usual cliffhangers and engulfed in murder and espionage.
Anthony Head reads the story beautifully and those of us who can remember the excellent radio series will look back on it fondly.
What a pity Francis Durbridge did not put his mysteries into book form.
You will not regret buying this one.

It is a crying shame that so many television programmes and radio serials were junked by the BBC in the 1970s. From episodes of Steptoe and son to Doctor Who and Dads Army. Another victim was the classic radio serial Paul Temple. Today only a few episodes remain of the detective serial.
Anthony Head is an excellent narrator. Bringing the stories here to life. It is apparant that Anthony is really enjoying the stories as he reads them. This is highly recommended.
