5 out of 5 stars A pacy adventure   December 14, 2008

The Time Capsule (Sarah Jane Adventures) I was a bit dubious about listening to this story as Peter Anghelides Doctor Who audio novel "Pest Control" did nothing for me, but fortunately his exclusive audio adventure for Sarah Jane is far more interesting and compelling listening. The story centres around the work experience jobs that Clyde and Luke are undertaking as part of their school curriculum: Luke's at the Natural History Museum setting up exhibitions and cataloguing items, while Clyde's working at one of the local supermarkets. Sarah Jane encounters him there and is puzzled by the behaviour of an elderly neighbour who seems to have developed an amazing agility despite his oft-lamented 'war wound'. Even more puzzling, though, is the way that the products in the supermarket form themselves into beings which try to protect the three artefacts.

There are a couple of slow moments in the story, but on the whole it whizzs along fairly quickly and is an entertaining piece of storytelling.

a talking book, on one cd, telling an all new story featuring the characters from the tv show the sarah jane adventures. the story is read by actress elisabeth sladen, who plays the title role in the show on tv. she does fairly decent impesssions of the style of speaking of the other three main characters, and does some good original voices of her own for the original characters in the tale.

the story is set in the tv show's second season, sometime after the first story, as it features the new character rani who first appeared after original character maria left.

the story runs for approximately one hour and five minutes. It involves sarah jane visting a supermarket where main character clyde is working, whilst her son luke is working at a museum. strange things happen in both places, and sarah has to enlist the help of rani [who doesnt appear till the last third of the story]. an alien force is at work here, and seems to be controlling an old man. what is it's agenda, and why does it want three particular objects?

franchise fiction of this kind can stand and fall on the strength of the story, as generally it's constrained by not being able to do anything different with the characters. this works quite well. it takes a little while to get going but that does rather help because for a long time you're as in the dark as sarah in regards to what's going on. ultimately once you know what the alien force is up to it's nothing too surprising, but the final scenes in a scrap metal yard are quite original and would have great to see on the tv screen.

and elisabeth sladen is a very good reader and a pleasure to listen to.

ultimately nothing earth shattering but a pleasant listen and well worth getting if you want a new sarah jane story
