Deeply moving book about a 14-year-old girl with AIDS July 14, 1999 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
Nancy, 14, falls for 18-year-old Collin and instantly they hit it off. He wants more than she's ready to give, and eventually he rapes her, leaving her emotionally distraught. Then she discovers he has infected her with the fatal AIDS disease. This diary describes how she handles her illness, how her friends react, and how the disease affects her life. She spirals towards death rapidly and in this book we learn of her depression, anxiety and acute emotional trauma. This book is a must-read.Also recommended: Go Ask Alice (Anonymous) Annie's Baby: The Diary of Anonymous, a Pregnant Teenager (Edited by Beatrice Sparks)
Wow . . . this book really made me think August 8, 1999 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
Before I read this book I never really thought about AIDS, never thought about teenagers dying. This book changed all that. "It Happened to Nancy" is a powerful book. Imagine - just imagine for a moment - that YOU were Nancy. Fourteen, with friends and a good life, and suddenly you're raped by the guy you love. Then you discover you've been infected with AIDS. You're going to die. SOON. Your immune system is already weak and the fatal disease is eating away at your life. You have only a few years left of your life when you thought you had decades ahead of you. HOW DO YOU COPE? If I was Nancy I don't think I could have coped with it. This book, taken from her own diary, (obviously, all names have been changed for privacy) will definitely make you think.
An amazing story February 8, 2004 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
This book tells the story of Nancy, a normal 14 year old girl who is date raped by her boyfriend. Reading from Nancy's own diary it is upsetting enough to read about her rape ordeal but she then finds out she has been infected with HIV. This was a very sad but captivating book, Nancy was an incredible person & much braver than I would be in her position. I think this book should be part of the school curriculum, it would certianly make teenagers think about safe sex.

This book was amazing. I've always been fond of diary type books. This was the most informative one i have ever read. Me, being a 13 year old girl, have a lot of friends who are all ready having sex. Mostly unprotected. They do it knowing the other doesn't have HIV, but after reading this book, i realize you may not be certain if you partner has the HIV virus or not. It's a book i'll be recommending to all of my friends. If they are going to have relations so early, they need protection. This book will hopefully change their prosepective. An amazing book that really let me see the other side of AIDS.
u wont be able to put this book down July 14, 2004 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
this book is a diary of a young girl who is infected with HIV through no fault of her own, she then takes us through her day to day life from the day where she was diagnosed till the day she died. i read this book in one day as i couldn't put it down! an amazing book which taught me things about HIV that i didn't even know - ie the bleeding and wetting the bed. This book should be made compulsory for all children at secondary school level to read, if this book does not save their lives and make them think about safe sex (unfortunatly nancy didn't get the choice!) then i dont know what will! this is a book i will be keeping for when i have children of my own.
