A touching and sensitive remembrance from Freddie's friends. September 13, 1999 24 out of 24 found this review helpful
FREDDIE MERCURY: THE REAL LIFE is an interesting, moving and very entertaining book. To me, the one word that describes Freddie Mercury is "unique". It seems that his dedication, determination and perfectionism towards his career, is what made him the superstar that he was. We can all learn from an example like that. His friends all agreed that he had a flamboyant personality on stage, and an almost shy, quiet personality off stage. I found this very endearing. I must say that the parts that made me laugh out loud, were some of Freddie's one-line quotes. My favorite was when he announced that his doctor had forbade him vodka because of a liver complaint, and he says, "So get me a brandy!" What a wonderful sense of humor he must have had. All in all, reading this book helped me learn more about a man I have admired for a very long time. I found this book funny, touching, informative and sad. It left me feeling joyous at what a radiant and charming man he must have been, and at the same time so sad, that we have lost such an intoxicating and sparkling star.
Freddie Mercury The AfterLife by David Evans and Peter Freestone. March 3, 2007 Susan (Ohio, USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I wrote this because all the other reviews seemed to be about the first book and not this second book, so I thought this second book, Freddie Mercury The Afterlife, needed an actual review, so here goes: The front cover is a lovely, sweet picture of Freddie and Miko, the back cover is a portion of the final arrangements made for Freddie. I wasn't expecting to see that and it made me very sad even though I know he has been gone 16 years now. This second book takes up where the first one left off and is a description of Peter (Phoebe) Freestone's life since Freddie's passing. He talks about the various things he has been doing throughout the years. Peter mentions what the people talked about in the first book are doing as of 2003. There are some pictures I hadn't seen before within the book. Peter describes a visit he paid to Garden Lodge in 2003, where he met with Mary Austin and got to see Delilah again. He discusses some of the many books which have been written about Freddie and what he thinks of them. I only mentioned some things, the book contains much more than what I mention. David Evans speaks in it too and there's even Recipes of the different foods that would be made for Freddie. Personally, it helped me to read this second book because it cleared up some confusion I had about some things written in the first book and too, even if it is silly on my part, it was nice to learn that Peter was okay, I had wondered since reading the first book.
if you don't like this, maybe you don't like freddie either August 14, 2004 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
I just cannot understand how some reviewers could give such negative comments to this book. Some of them even state that the book is a boring list of events, people and places. This is a biography, not a science fiction book, and Freddie Mercury was a rock-star: of course his life was frantic and crammed with events, people and places! Peter Freestone does what any good biographer should do: he takes us into freddie's everyday life, whether he was on tour, in the recording studio or at home, and reports about it in any tiny detail. In case you get lost in the so called "list of people" appearing in the book, there is a "cast list" at the beginning, which I found a very original, funny and useful idea, adding some theatrical colour to the book, and in line with freddie's own ironical self-portrait as "the great pretender". The author does not attempt to describe how freddie WAS (these empty boring sentences like "he was like this and like that"!), but he lets us "breathe" his complex and multi-faceted personality just telling what he would DO, each moment in the day, like in a diary. This gives the reader the vivid impression to be there and live close to freddie while his own life is in the making. Nothing is left unsaid, and everything emerges naturally from his own behaviour: his love for cats, his taste in art, clothing, food..his generosity as well as his tantrums and whims. Nevertheless, the last chapters lose the narrative style of a diary to acquire a sound artistic value far beyond the average depth of thought you may find in a biography; they are true jewels. The authors focuses on the complex emotional balance artists (and freddie in particular) keep with art, love, sex, and life itself, which then obviously influences their relationship and choices of friends and lovers. Freestone's psychological insight reaches remarkable depths, showing that, like freddie, also his friends must have owned an uncommon sensitivity for people's feelings; I will never forget those lines.. "Those first wonderful feelings most of us get from falling in love, Freddie would get from a song that he'd written". This also reveals the love that the author himself must have felt for freddie, which allowed him to know him so well. I am a passionate Queen fan and I have read other biographies of freddie, watched a number of dvds, videos, whatever might give me some information about the band and in particular about Freddie. This is the best book I ever read, and I would recommend it to any fan of Freddie. My dream was to meet Freddie when he was alive, but now I would be very happy if I could meet Peter Freestone and have a couple of words with him!
Freddie Mercury by Peter Freestone January 12, 2006 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I loved this book. Peter wrote this with alot of heart. I am a great fan of Queen & Freddie. I loved this book so much I am buying another one because everyone wants to read it but I don't want to give it up. I also use it all the time for references. Peter puts so much feeling in the book I can't help but get a tear in my eye when I see the video of Freddie with the vest on with the pictures of his cats, or read the endeing of the book. I feel Peter gave Freddie the Respect he should have. You read so much about Freddie that I think people just want there name in print & don't care what is true or not. Thank you Peter for telling the truth & I hope putting an end to all the other garbage that people have wrote. Kim
