At first, I thought I had bought an imitation of this year's Rupert Annual. Unusually, the illustrations are unsigned and certainly not by John Harrold. They also lack the detail, depth and variety that I have grown to admire.
I notice that the production team has radically changed. There is a reader-survey included in the book, which I will certainly respond to as a concerned "Rupert Aficionado" (and grand-parent!) - but I cannot imagine many youngsters responding!
A nit-picking note too, about some rhyming text: In the first story, Rupert and the Ice-Cream Van we find "There's stalls and sideshows.......". Anna, watch your grammar!
I think the magic has gone out of Nutwood this year, with John Harrold.
Let's hope that production values will be returned to standard quickly, because The Rupert Annual Numer 73 seems to be cut-and-paste, and cut-price.
