5 out of 5 stars Erotic literature at it's best   June 17, 2003

Written, in a time when erotica and SM were strictly taboo, this novel is devoid of the coarseness that is usually found in works handling the subject.
The cover tells that this is neither a work of fiction nor an autobiographical account. I believe it to be a combination of the two.

From the very first page I was gripped. Who indeed, would think that a walk in the park would lead so quickly to a journey which would change ones life, so completely, forever? So in love is O, that at the Chateau Roissy she abandons all sense of self, stability and safety and commits utterly to her lovers desires, to a live of submission.

A wonderfully written, deeply sympathetic and highly erotic novel, that will be read again and again.

I would also recommend this book, to anyone trying to gain an understanding of SM.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best erotic novels ever written   March 3, 1999

For many people this is the single and most important classic of modern SM literature. With recommendations by people like Graham Greene and JG Ballard, this is en eminently respectable introduction to many of the themes of SM, beautifully written and incredibly erotic. The story involves O - the female narrator of the story - and her complete sexual subjugation at the Chateau Roissy and beyond. A superb book, and like Maria del Rey's 'The Institute' (and her other books) and Jean de Berg's 'The Image' it can't be recommended enough.

5 out of 5 stars Imaginative and highly erotic, one of the best books ever.   December 6, 1999

It is so rare that a book delivers an understanding of BD/SM, and from a womans perspective too.The book is well written with vivid descriptions, and an excellent story to be told. This book has changed the direction of my life forever. I have entered another dimension, a world where love and pain walk hand in hand, and I understand my place. This book is highly erotic, a sensual read, about a woman subjected to love, for love......and giving it her all. Read it.

5 out of 5 stars An erotic masterpiece   December 12, 2007

I don't know what I could possibly add to any discussion of this erotic masterpiece, so I'm happy just to contribute my voice to the chorus of praise. Miss Reage's "love letter" is as potent now as it ever was. Please give us more strong, self-assured women like Pauline Reage, Belle de Jour and Niki Flynn!

5 out of 5 stars A noir classic of love and betrayal   February 6, 2000

Brilliant book - but very dark - O falls in love and is then abused and humiliated and then abandoned. I think you can read a bit of the author's history in the emotional intensity of it - apparently distinguished French Academician Dominique Aury was trying to keep her lover and sending him love letters to try and keep him interested - which formed the basis of this book
