Loved it! January 22, 2008 K Randolph 12 out of 19 found this review helpful
I picked up Lessons in Heartbreak by Cathy Kelly, I had not expected it to be much more than a semi-interesting read. However, with every page turn, I became more and more attached to the novel's heroine, and actually found it very difficult to put the book down. Since reading this book, I have highly recommended it to all my girlfriends. It's a beautiful story about life, love and friendship filled with excitement, heartbreak and hope. I'd also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's bestselling novel--The Fates--if you haven't yet!!
Fantastic Chic-lit! April 8, 2008 Cherie (Scotland) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is my first Cathy Kelly novel and I can't wait to buy another. I could not wait to read it every day and went to bed early just so I could read my book in peace. I sat reading in bed 'til 1am as I was on the last 3 chapters and had to know what happened. I thought the characters were described beautifully as I could visualise them perfectly. The ending was done brilliantly as I have never read a novel where the death was set so beautifully giving the detail of what the grandmothers sees in heaven. Can't believe anyone would find this book boring-it's great especially wiht thhe chapters relating to when the grandmother was a young woman.
Cathy Kelly does it again August 5, 2008 E. E. Brennan (Crossgar) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book is essential reading for any female that has ever experienced the sadness of a break up. The book teaches us that not everything you take for granted is as it seems and there are unexpected twists and turns in the story. Strength, compassion and the ties of family and friends are highlighted in the book which although not intellectually challenging does give us all some food for thought. I read this book in 1 day as I lifted it and literally could not put it down. Every woman should read this book at least once in their life.
Lovely way to spend a wet Sunday September 1, 2008 Mimzi (Hertfordshire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was scouting around the house looking for something to fill in an atrociously wet Sunday, and remembered someone had lent me a pile of books amongst which was this one. I had not previously read any of Cathy Kelly's books, or even heard of her, but I am very glad I have made her aquaintance. Once started I couldn't put it down, I read until I got to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although the story did jump about a bit in time it was much easier to keep track of than several other books I have recently read. I liked the characters (well almost all, surely no one could like Sybil) and could so easily picture them from their description and it brought the book to life for me. It also gave an insight into the horrors the medical profession had to cope with during that war and their valient efforts to help those almost beyond help and I found it very moving in places. It was good to know the matron did have a heart. Even the stranded whale was very topicalLessons in Heartbreak I will certainly be on the look out for more books by this writer, I found it entertaining, amusing and thought provoking, what more can you ask for light reading?
