Escapist boaty stuff June 6, 2007 Mrs. M. G. Powling 25 out of 26 found this review helpful
If you'll forgive the modern expression yet again, Katie Fforde's books do what they say on the cover. They are lighthearted and always have happy endings. You know the heroine (or two heroines in this instance, one younger, one older) will drive off - or in this case, sail off - into the sunset with Mr Right. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. We all need a dose of fictional romance now and again. For this romance, Katie has found two women, both of them escaping from love-less relationships: Jo's husband has found a younger model, and Dora, in old fashioned parlance, is a bolter, dumping her soon-to-be husband before saying "I do" to a boring marriage. For accommodation - and in order to get their heads around the fact that they're now both single again - they share an old barge near the Thames and that's when their adventures begin. A fun book with terrific river-side scenery and heartwarming characters whom you care about. A delicious, holiday read.
Synopsis March 9, 2007 Hayley (UK) 35 out of 42 found this review helpful
I aways love kate fforde's books and I've read nearly all of them. I'll definately be getting this one too. I love the fact that there is always a happy ending, and they are so easy to read, i can just relax with one at night after doing my work. I thought I'd add a synopsis i found as there isn't one on here and it bugs the hell out of me when i can't fnd a blurb. "Love isn't always plain sailing...When Jo's husband trades her in for a younger model, she suddenly finds herself living on a barge near the Thames. Used to being a kept woman, she soon realises she'll need more than a few culinary skills to keep herself afloat. Aware she was about to make a terrible mistake, Dora has fled from a huge wedding, her fiance, her mother and a very critical village to come under Jo's protective wing. While offering mutual support, Dora gets a job where she has to row to work and Jo works out how to make a living. And though they may not know much about boats they're determined to make the best of things. One thing's for certain, though, they've both sworn off men for good. Unfortunately, life has other plans and inflicts arrogant but attractive Marcus, who's the oracle on all things nautical, and laid-back, charming, jack-of-all-trades Tom on their ordered lives. And as if they didn't have enough to worry about, they've discovered they have to take the barge to sea... "

Having adored every Katie Fforde book written, I expect this one to follow suit. Yes, there is a formula in her writing, where it all comes right in the end, but it is a winning formula which most readers love!! As a teacher embroiled in the academic - I need a break!! To me, her books are pure escapism and I keep looking for the next one. Keep writing Katie - they are fab!!!
Falling in love again... July 28, 2007 Lesley Cookman (Kent UK) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
If I could give it 6 stars I would. Does it matter that the voyage itself doesn't start until half way through? I didn't think that was the point. I just want a Marcus to walk into my life, and as for Tom - what a refreshingly different hero. And as for Floosie - I've got one in my books, too. I don't care how it's spelt.
