Well drawn characters October 6, 2008 Helen McGill (Barnard Castle, England) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I agree with another reviewer that this is a good bedtime book but it's equally good as a travelling companion. The characters are well drawn and, held together by the 'festive' season as they are, have resonances of most of our lives. I'm not usually a fan of short stories and probably wouldn't have bought it had I realised but I'm glad I did.
not the Meave Binchy i like. September 15, 2008 grannydot (France) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is a book of short stories. It is a "pick up and put down" book,a book for the bedside, because you will never fall asleep before you finish a story, because some of them are very short. and you never loose where you are. I didn't enjoy it as much as her, for the want of a better word,---"proper books", but never the less still Meave Binchy style.
A bit depressing October 18, 2008 H (Milton Keynes) Good, but not the pick-me-up I expected. I like the fact that this is a collection of short stories. You can read each story quite quickly, so the book is great for picking up and putting down. However, I thought this was going to be a collection of 'heartwarming' stories, and that it might start getting me in the mood for Christmas. Some stories are warmer than others; some are pretty bleak. Lots of the stories are about people having affairs, having lost a loved one, broken marriages etc. Realistic it may be, but there's too much of it. It's repetitive. I guess it reminds you of how forced Christmas can be at times. Bring back escapism I say! To end on a more positive note, there are some nice, humourous, insightful touches.
Heart-warming stocking-filler November 3, 2008 hw (UK) In this delightful collection of short stories, Maeve Binchy explores the theme of a family Christmas from every possible angle. There are the usual suspects; grumpy grandparents, bolshie teenagers and mums who've reached their wit's end, but Binchy also finds time for the newly separated, the recently widowed and those for whom Christmas is "just another day". Each story is beautifully self-contained, with the characters brought to life in a few well-crafted sentences. Each domestic crisis is acutely observed and resolved with good humour and not a little ingenuity. My only criticism is that these stories were originally published elsewhere and some of the details can give them a slightly dated feel. This book is aimed unashamedly at the Christmas market with a middle-of-the road female readership in mind. Heart-warming without being tacky, this is safe stocking-filler, with the short story format ideally suited to being "dipped into" over the holiday period.
