Amazon.co.uk Review Ekhart Tolle's message is simple: living in the now is the truest path to happiness and enlightenment. And while this message may not seem stunningly original or fresh, Tolle's clear writing, supportive voice and enthusiasm make this an excellent manual for anyone who's ever wondered what exactly "living in the now" means. Foremost, Tolle is a world-class teacher, able to explain complicated concepts in concrete language. More importantly, within a chapter of reading this book, readers are already holding the world in a different container--more conscious of how thoughts and emotions get in the way of their ability to live in genuine peace and happiness.Tolle packs a lot of information and inspirational ideas into The Power of Now. (Topics include the source of Chi, enlightened relationships, creative use of the mind, impermanence and the cycle of life.) Thankfully, he's added markers that symbolise "break time". This is when readers should close the book and mull over what they just read. As a result, The Power of Now reads like the highly acclaimed A Course in Miracles--a spiritual guidebook that has the potential to inspire just as many study groups and change just as many lives for the better. --Gail Hudson

amazing clarity January 28, 2008 Janie (Brighton, England) 65 out of 78 found this review helpful
This is possibly the most powerful and insightful book on spirituality ever written. The most amazing thing about it is its clarity - its account of the workings of the human minds is truly stunning. Like no other book I've read, it has an enlightening effect as you read it - you can feel the clarity and insight spreading to you. It has led me on to another amazing book called the Fall by Steve Taylor, which is highly recommended by Eckhart on his website. The Fall provides a historical and cultural context to Eckhart's work, showing the ego's terrible effects throughout history and suggesting that, as a species, we are now transcending it. The Fall:the Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of a New Era: The Insanity of the Ego in Human History and the Dawning of a New Era
This book is the answer you have been looking for! January 23, 2002 A. J. Bray (lowestoft, suffolk) 157 out of 193 found this review helpful
I have read many self-help books in my life, but not one has ever had the same impact on my life as the 'The Power of Now'. Every word 'oozes' absolute truth and it can only have been inspired by the author first having had a life that made no sense. As a result, the author Eckhart Tolle had a total breakdown, but like a phoenix rising from the ashes and with more than a little help from The Buddha's teachings he analysed his life situation and found that the basic problem was that his mind was 'all noise'from living in the past and thinking 'it will be alright in the future'. Recognise any similarities with yourself anybody? Solution, get this book and start practicing with a conscious mind and living in the present moment. Banish guilt, regret and grievences from your life. Learn to forgive and find peace. Recognise that the mind is basically all ego and that much of it is based on false characteristics, trying to be something that it is not, seeking power and influence that cannot be sustained. Where do you finish up? Often rejected by the world. Living in the present moment does not mean withdrawing from modern society or even material possessions. What it does mean is living from a deeper perspective from within yourself, the 'inner being'and finding fulfilment well away from where you thought you would find it, somewhere on the outside. The way Eckart Tolle describes the concept is not difficult to understand, but it will require consistent practice. Follow his clear directions and you will be able to experience relief immediately, even if only momentarily. Buy this book, read it, re-read, practice its teachings and you will be on the road to a full, spiritually based (not religious), life that could only be dreamed of without it.
Now is the time. June 20, 2002 67 out of 84 found this review helpful
This is a question and answer book about how to live life to its fullest potential. But beware: it is not a new system of ways to manipulate your circumstances to get what you think you want. It is actually about getting into the moment, living in the now, and discovering a possibility for well-being inconceivable to the mind. I found the questions asked compelling and familiar. For example, "How do I get rid of emotional pain?" The answer is to experience the emotions or sensations we call emotional pain without judging them. The pain is just our resistance to those emotions or sensations. Tolle's tone is sincere, supportive, and rings with truth. Just reading the book is an opportunity to experience enlightenment. One of my favorite quotes is "You do not need to wait for the world to become sane, or for somebody else to become conscious, before you can be enlightened."If you're looking for additional titles that don't just discuss enlightenment, but actually convey the experience, you'll be delighted to read "Working on Yourself Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane. The Kanes' style is down-to-earth and graspable for those who want to discover their own greatness. My hat is off to the Kanes and Tolle.
Extraordinary Book May 11, 2002 70 out of 88 found this review helpful
This is a truly excellent and amazing book. I've read lots of self-help books in the past but none made any lasting change whatsoever. The Power of Now, on the other hand, has caused a significant inner transformation and changed the way I see life and living. It's like a burden has been lifted off me and there is now more of a lightness, ease and joy to living. It's the sort of book you will probably reread a number of times, not because it is difficult to understand but because its message is so simple, yet so profound. If the book makes an impression on you I'd also highly recommend listening to some of Eckhart Tolle's talks, which are available on tape/CD. Don't miss out on this book.
The best book I have ever read September 10, 2001 Angie Elliott , (karuna@transitionsreiki.com) (Northampton, England) 60 out of 76 found this review helpful
When I read Eckhart Tolle's account of his spiritual awakening in Cygnus books magazine, I immediately understood what he was saying, having experienced similar enlightenment following the sudden death of my husband, three years ago. Going on to read the book, I was not disappointed. It is absolutely brilliant, I can identify with everything he says from firsthand experience, but do not share his gift for being able to share the information in such an articulate manner. Discovering this book at this time was no accident, as these things never are. As a Reiki Master/Teacher, I have read much, attended courses and listened to many people, only to have come full circle back to the very simple truth that is our spiritual reality and the power of now. If you read only one more book in your life, make it this one. Its simple truth is all you need to access Being - being the strength of all that is, was and ever will be.
