Just read it!!! February 22, 2008 A. Hope (Birmingham, England) 96 out of 107 found this review helpful
I am not sure how to describe this book - without either giving too much away - or making it sound depressing and grisely which it is not at all. Suffice to say this is a novel narrated by death. It is the story of a young girl living in Nazi Germany, who goes to live with a foster family, and learns to read, and falls in love with: books, her new Papa, a boy called Rudy, and a Jew hiding in a basement. It is also a story of WW2 - from a persepective we don't often see - ordinaary Germans - some of whom were members of "The Party." Death takes the reader by the hand, and leads us through the lives and deaths of people in Liesel's world, he kind of "gives the game away" a few times - and yet that never spoils it - it prepares the reader for what's ahead. This is an astonishing book - the writing is great - an unusual style - but one that fits perfectly somehow with the voice of Death - and that of the unforgettable Liesel.
I really enjoyed this book, a big surprise February 14, 2008 Insomniac (Manchester, UK) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This is excellently written, and develops all of the characters so you can picture what they look, sound and smell like. It traces the story of a little girl who is sent to live with foster parents in Hitler's Germany. It follows her as she grows up and her relationships with friends and family. These foster parents then go on to hide a Jewish man in their cellar, and you get the perspective of what that was like through both adult and child's eyes. It's not too judgemental about what was happening at the time, rather lays out a description and allows you to reach your own conclusions. It's also not a sentimental book, as it's narrated by Death. Not my normal sort of read, but finished it in two days as I wanted to learn what happened to everybody. Highly recommended.
Amazing! February 24, 2008 Nicole M (Birmingham, England) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
My mom recommended this book to me and I wasn't really expecting much except the average WWII storyline but this book was great. It is so odd but wonderful how the narrator is Death himself and it allows the reader to see a whole different view of the story. Hope I'm not spoiling anything but the end was amazing and made me cry. By Nicole M, age 15.
Fantastic book! May 15, 2008 Mrs. N. J. Marsh 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I read this book as my son was bought it as a gift. It made me weep, it is so intense and very moving. Whether I would recommend it as a childs book (that is how it is advertised in my book shop!) I don't know. I think it needs an adults perception of the potential cruelty of the world and the kindness of good people to really appreciate this tale.
Almost made me feel sorry for Nazi Germany January 20, 2008 Mr. Ray Smilie (Oxford) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'd picked this book up a few times, and put it back down. The thought of reading something from a Nazi perspective left me cold. I never thouhgt that Nazi's had hearts........... Eventually I purchased the book. I just could not put this book down, it's a great story, of both grief and beauty. I read this in just over three days, and towards the climax it brought tears to my eyes. By the way, I think this book would make a great film. Fantastic book, the author is going to have a tough time following this.
