The longest Siege October 13, 2003 Samuel Romilly (London United Kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
A very well written and beautifully illustrated book on the long but little known siege of Edinburgh in the Scottish Civil War. Mary's supporters were holed up in the town and castle and the supporters of her son James VI were unable to dislodge them. That is, until Elizabeth of England sent up her weapons of mass destruction and within days the Castle was reduced to rubble, and its leaders hanged. There is also a chapter on the dramatic surprise capture of Dumbarton Castle, and another on the daring Stirling Raid. All you ever wanted to know about this fascinating chapter of Scottish history, and the end of any hope of the retoration of Mary Queen of Scots

A fantastic account of Scottish history! Potter encapsulates this piece of history, with eloquence and striking precision. Endowed with great illustrations, Potter concludes that it was a civil war upon which "little hinged in the long term" for both sides thus resulting in pointless suffering. This is definitely a great follow up to Potter's previous book Blood Feud.
Fantastic! January 29, 2004 June Simpson (Durham) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This breath taking account of Scottish history follows Potter's earlier book, 'Blood Feud' (equally worthy of praise). The present book concerns the long conflict and in particular the fate of Edinburgh town and castle during the 1571-73 siege. Potter employs the use of apt and often very stunning portraits of nobles and monarchs which assists visually in conveying his account. This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in Scottish history. A definite 'must buy'!
