Amazon.co.uk Review This 13-part TV adaptation of Defoe's classic story is one of the most comprehensive of the many versions made for large or small screen over the years. It was a huge success when broadcast on both sides of the Atlantic in the mid-1960s. One aspect of its appeal was the title theme, which was so popular it was released as a single. The "Main Theme" is an adventurous piece with a slightly melancholy lilt. Thankfully it doesn't re-appear endlessly throughout the score. One effect that does--and takes a little getting used to--is a manipulated bass guitar which strikes what can only be described as "wet" notes! Overall the score is a very varied work, as you'd expect from so much material, including flashbacks that expanded beyond Defoe's original island perimeters. This allowed the composers to stretch beyond merely painting a portrait of loneliness and to capture the quaintness of the English countryside ("Escapades in York") as well as lush beauty of a tropical paradise ("Exploring the Island"). --Paul Tonks

The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe December 23, 2004 David Speed 34 out of 34 found this review helpful
I am not usually so taken by things that I feel that I have to put it in writing. This CD is an exception. As soon as I heard the first few bars of the haunting main theme, I was transported back to my younger days. I can remember the anticipation as I waited for the programme to start, and I now know that it was as much for the music as it was for the story itself. I sat there entralled as I listened to the whole of the CD. It was incredible to think that I last saw this about 30 years ago, and yet each tune gave me the appropriate feeling as I checked it against the listing, remembering how Crusoe was suppposed to be feeling in each situation. If you are 40 - 55 ish and you have a sense of nostalgia, coupled with the gift of recognising musical expression, then you must buy this CD. For what was apparently a low budget TV series, the mood music is absolutely fantastic, and for me it ranks alongside the classical greats by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin et al, and easily compares (for me) with any comtemporary music. Buy it - you won't regret it.
Haunting and so beautiful October 31, 2003 Adrian Nathan (Eastwood, Notts, United Kingdom) 28 out of 28 found this review helpful
For those of us who fondly remember the black and white tv series that was shown repeatedly during the long school summer holidays of our youth this album is an essential. The main theme will be familiar to many, even those who have never seen the show as it has featured in tv adverts over the years. It and several others are repeated in different versions throughout the cd and those tunes really do get inside your head. The orchestration is superb and there are some wonderful solos that really tug at the heartstrings. At over 70 minutes long the collection is also great value for money.
CHILDHOOD YEARS RE-LIVED WITH ROBINSON CRUSOE July 22, 2004 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
Help! I can't stop playing this CD! It has rekindled so many childhood memories of being sat in front of a black and white t.v. set circa 1972, watching Robinson Crusoe. But this music has stayed with so many people years after the series was last shown, and that has to be a sign of just how good it is in itself. The themes are simple, yet memorable, and skilfully handled in their varied instrumental arrangements, they easily stand up to repeated listening. For example, the Main Theme appears initially with a soaring string melody, but later appears for solo viola(?), evoking the mood of Crusoe's fate. The same theme re-appears yet again, transformed by some rather up-beat bongos or similar percussion, giving both a Pacific islands atmosphere and a slightly 60's feel to the music. Overall it is very varied - some tracks sound like they could have strayed from a Spaghetti Western score, but one set on a desert island in the early 18th century - sort of Morricone meets Playford's English Dancing Master, and the pastiche baroque harpsichord numbers representing Crusoe's youth are just classics of their type. One of many favourite tracks has to be 'Pirates', with its bustling melody, great harmonies and rhythms - there's more than a touch of humour here. There's no denying the nostalgia value of this CD for us over-thirties, but this music is better than that and deserves to be heard by a wider audience. Buy it!
Marvellous memorable music from a superb TV series January 12, 2003 sedstevo (UK) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
I, like many others of my generation enjoyed watching the TV series during a school holiday when I was younger. The music had always remained with me and as I grew older, spent many hours trying to find out who wrote and recorded the music. It was via the internet on a discussion of other topics that someone remarked on where I might find some sources. Needless to say, I bought the soundtrack straight away (in fact I bought two) and then went on to buy the video set as well. The music succeeds on several fronts. One, as a genuine soundtrack that superbly matches the film story, two as taste of music and sound of the period and thirdly as part of the soundtrack to my younger years. It is haunting, romantic, dramatic and many things more. I highly recommend it.
Magical Music from a Magical Series from a Magical Time February 6, 2007 A. J. Rabet (United Kingdom) 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
I bought this album after a search as basically I could not get the theme music out of my head after 40 plus years. The haunting themes remain one of the great TV programme soundtracks. They were never obtrusive but added to the atmosphere to a stupendous series. Much recommended to all 40 somethings and makes this reviewer wish for the simpler life and entertainment we had in those halcyon days of the 60's and 70's
