Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Such are the near-generational gaps between latter-day AC/DC albums that it's always tempting to hail the arrival of a new one as a return to form. Black Ice arrives a whopping eight years after the band's last offering, Stiff Upper Lip, but one chorus into "Rock N Roll Train", the wise man would conclude that any evolution here is as slow and incremental as, well, evolution. A punchy, straightforward opener that finds Angus Young in good riff and Brian Johnson preaching a familiar gospel of schoolgirls and schoolboys, fantasy and ecstasy, it's familiar in the best possible way. A little deeper into Black Ice, however, and there's evidence of a slightly altered approach. Producer Brendan O'Brien softens and fleshes out the stripped-down, electric blues sound AC/DC rediscovered on 1995's Ballbreaker, and in places the band follow suit--take "Anything Goes", a poppy stomp that recalls O'Brien's other recent charge, Bruce Springsteen. Elsewhere, "Stormy May Day" and "Money Made" find Young taking up the slide for a few Zeppelin-flavoured licks. A few new paths, then, but all in all, the destination is pretty much the same: another solid late-period AC/DC album that, while unlikely to dislodge Back in Black from the fan's pedestal, finds its makers rocking into ripe old age. --Louis Pattison

5 out of 5 stars The Boys Are Back   October 22, 2008

For those of you who are huge ac/dc fans you know the score, for those who arent let me explain. ac/dc pump out straight forward hard rock, no ballads, no epic ten minute journeys just foot stomping rock. The cliche you could most associate with ac/dc is "if aint broke don't fix it" and with Black Ice the boys have certainly not tried to "fix" anything.

Black Ice provides fans with another solid performance, 15 fantastic songs with some real standouts along the way. Obviously for those of you who believed ac/dc died with bon scott then dont buy this brian hasnt suddenly turned into the late legend and theres no point in buying it just to criticise as one review on here obviously has. However for those of you with sense Black Ice should be a proud addition to the collection.

.The opening track, also the single "rock n roll train" is a classic DC sing along with a solid riff as always from the youngs.
."skies on fire" follows the single and keeps the albums rhythm, and its chorus is somewhat reminiscent of "rising power" from flick of the switch.
."Big Jack" sits third in the set list and gives the album a bit of groove that is so well executed on songs like "money talks" and "you shook me all night long", a fantastic track.
.Next up is "anything goes", this is a catchy trakc that almost has a jingle, one review suggests it has a christmas fell and I can see where there comeing from, its another solid track and keeps the album pumping.
.Next is "war machine", a great opening build up leading to a great track reminiscent of the razors edge track "if you dare"
.Folling that we have "smash 'n' grab", this is another track with a great sing along chorus with some classic dc guitar work from the youngs.
."spoiling for a fight" comes seventh, and its another soid track with a catchy riff and some great solo work from angus.
.Next up is my early favourite from the album "wheels", the chorus is fantastically catchy and the guitar work enhances the song to great hieghts, it had me singing for a while once the album had finished.
."decibel" follows, keeping the albums beat going the track has some great vocals that sit on top of a solid rhythm.
.Track 10 is "stormy may day" ac/dc explore there bluesy side more than ever before here with angus using a slide to great effect, the lyrics are catchy too.
."She likes rock n roll" comes next and its another great track, you may think im a bit biased and i suppose i may be but the album really is fantastic, brian preaches of a rockers fantasy a rock n roll loving woman.
."money made" follows, a rocking riff and more great solo work.
."rock n roll dream" is track 13, another early stand out for me a good rocking track with simple but effective lyrics.
."rocking all the way" is the penultimate track, its another bluesy oriented track with some great vocals.
.Finally we have the title track "black ice", although the song doesnt reach the heights of other title tracks from brian such as "back in black" or "for those about to rock.." but it is a great track and a solid finsh to another amazing album.

I say if you like jonnas work with the band then you cant go wrong here its an amazing album to follow up the fantastic stiff upper lip.

5 out of 5 stars Toe Tappin' Blues Rock Groove   October 17, 2008

Many other above reviews give good detailed analysis of the Black Ice track by track. I won't because others have done an excellent job. However what I would like to say is this album is superb from start to finish. From seeing Ac/Dc on Top of the Tops in 1978 playing Rock n Roll Damnation I have been a massive fan and bought every album. But that is not to say there hasn't been problems. Between 1975 - 1980 each album was a hard rock blues masterpiece. Then from 1981 - 1990 they struggled making quality albums, creating only 3 or 4 good tracks on each and a lot of filler. Far too much fast rock with no groove, hooks, cunning, or guile. Then for me, with the return of Phil Rudd they refound their creative form and Ballbreaker and Stiff Upper Lip had 5 or 6 excellent tracks on each, but they were still not "complete" albums like in the 1970's. But now in 2008 with Black Ice, here is their best album since 1980, and a "complete" album with full of excellent tracks, no filler and superb production. The toe tappin' blues groove is back with a feel good factor in the choruses and sound. When Ac/Dc are on form no one can touch them. This is one the albums of the decade. Probably, but hopefully not their last. However, their promoter for this upcoming tour has underestimated on a monumental scale how much in demand these guys are. I want to see them live again but literally it seems on the day of ticket release the venues have sold out in minutes. At this rate many real fans that refuse to pay tout prices are not going to get a chance to see them. Shame.

5 out of 5 stars Packs a wallup!!!!!!!!!!   October 19, 2008

briantvr "briantvr" - keep your ignorant opinions to yourself - Neil Young sang "it's better to burn out than fade away". Joe Elliot and Def Leppard covered Hey, Hey, My, My just recently. As a music "fan" from the 70's you should know that. And, excuse me. Def Leppard? A band that should have packed it in 10 years ago, yet are still going, and what do you know - the latest album is actually decent - so perhaps aging rock stars don't fade away - they just get better with age.........hmmmmmmmmm.
Black Ice is the best AC/DC album in a long time, although I enjoyed Stiff Upper Lip as well. Black Ice picks up where The Razors Edge left off, and packs a wallup in the process.
This album will show all the nu-metal and nu-whatever bands out there today how it's done!

5 out of 5 stars 8 years well worth the wait   October 22, 2008

The likes of Rock N Roll train throbs and bumps with enough excitement to get the juices going since its what you expect from AC/DC nothing but heads down riffing from Angus Young to the saucy singing of Brian Johnsons infamous wail that unlike any other album you could actually make out what he is saying.

This album is hardly somthing you could skip a track with as Skies on Fire, War Machine and the gentle ballad of anything goes is pure quality rock n roll the best they have made in ages which despite the 8 year gap between this one and stiff upper lip it was well worth the wait it would be a pity if this turns out to be AC/DC'S final hurrah!
