Amazon.co.uk Review
It's right there; on the cover, the spine, or illuminating from your iPod screen. But it's hard to corroborate it in your mind. London singer-songwriter Adele's debut album is titled 19, referencing her age, and there are hints it's true--its themes are almost exclusively concerned with young love's highs and (mostly) lows and there's a clipped estuary English tide-mark to her voice, allying her with the fresh-faced modern female songwriting guard; Lily Allen, Kate Nash, et al. But the sheer weight of her maturity--vocally, emotionally and in overall poise—really reduces that all to circumstantial evidence. Adele is carrying something much bigger here, you can't help but be consumed by it on "Daydreamer" with it's jazzy tip-toeing guitar and elastic vocal range and "Hometown Glory" with its deep, lonely piano serving as a bed for the raw emotional undressing that takes place above it. Draw a line between timeless, powerful singers like Ella Fitzgerald and the modern standard of Amy Winehouse; Adele balances and pirouettes confidently along that tightrope. Winehouse particularly informs the likes of "Cold Shoulder" and double-bass heavy "Best for Last", and that's not an alignment that's ever going to be easy to realise credibly. Needless to say, she does, with ease. On future classic "Chasing Pavements" she also gives a nonsensical phrase a handful of heart in lieu of meaning and when you can pull that off convincingly you know you're in possession of something special. Who dares to dream what bigger numbers could bring. --James Berry

5 out of 5 stars Hometown Glory   January 9, 2008

Adele has a beautiful voice, which is showcased well on her debut album 19. Any fan of this lady will be familiar with some of the songs on here. The album opens with two favorites Daydreamer and Best For Last, both with their striped down quality intact. Some surprises though. The Bob Dylan cover Make You Feel My Love sounds Elton John circa 70's, it's a great example of a ballad done well. While Tired, a Cure like pop track is a jumpy contemporary chart hit, if I ever heard one. Adele's Mark Ronson collaboration Cold Shoulder, a raw string filled 007 charm.

As for the rest, well they're just Adele doing what she does best, brilliant jazz tinged soul with a contemporary edge. And there's not many singers around who can match her standard.

Then there's Hometown Glory.

words are not enough to describe this girls amazing vocal and song writing talent. I've heard her compared to Amy Winehouse, who herself, is an awesome talent, but Adele needn't be compared to anyone, she stands alone in her originality, look forward to seeing her go from strength to to strength - the best thing i've heard in along time - thanks Adele

Adele has been around for many months now and her song Hometown Glory was her breakthru song, and a total master piece. Her voice and lyrics are currently 2nd to no-one. I suggest if you are unsure you simply go to her myspace page and listen to some of her songs... then quickly get back here and order the album! She will be the biggest UK female artist of 2008 with awards a plenty of that I am sure. Yes there are many female singers around at the moment, but none and I mean none of the quality or uniqueness of this talented young lady.

Don't Miss this one!!

This debut album from Adele is absolutely excellant. Not only has she got a great soulful voice but she also has great material and can sing live which I think makes this the best debut since Lily Allen back in 2006!

If you love witty lyrics (Lily Allen, Kate Nash, Arctic Monkeys) that are sung in a soulful voice (Amy Winehouse, James Morrison) then this is the album for you.

Stand out tracks =

Daydreamer
Chasing Pavements
Melt My Heart To Stone
Hometown Glory

I found this album hard to get into at first,I couldn't help making comparisons to Miss Amy, however one month on and this album has now become a firm favourite, it's great to sing along with!
Purchase, give it time, it will win you over!
