Essential Metal Masterpiece September 29, 2008 Big Jim (London, UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Trivium have finally arrived! The Metallica comparisons have been well and truly shrugged off and this album takes Trivium into the next league. And make no mistake, although Death Magnetic is a fine album, this one is more "now", more "future", more "wow"! Pretentious twaddle that bit I know, but this is seriously heavy, seriously melodic when required - excellent singalong choruses aplenty, and onlt a hintof balladry in the last extended track Shogun. Strange album title though, as most of the tracks deal with Greek mythology yet the album is called "Shogun", Am I missing something here? Seriously though, any metal fan shouldn't miss this as it will be on all the most discerning "best of 2008" lists at the end of the year.
Didn't think it was possible... October 13, 2008 tom (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wasn't expecting it at all, but this album completely blew me away. I loved their second offering 'Ascendancy', but their third album 'The Crusade' although it wasn't bad, i found i didn't get into it as much. This album on the other hand i loved from the first listen. The screaming is back, but the clean singing vocals have remained, and they have pulled it off brilliantly. Whatever you do, don't discount Trivium because you didn't like the crusade, as they are back, and better than ever!
Surprising! October 2, 2008 Mr. A. R. Everitt (Nuneaton, Warwickshire United Kingdom) 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
Ok, let's get this clear - i've never thought much of Trivium - from the 1st track on Ascendancy to now, i've been HIGHLY anti-Trivium, as they seemed somewhat staid and dull... a bit generic if you will! This has all changed. Having heard a mass of tracks off this album i'm pleased to announce that this is actually a bloody good album! They've finally stepped out of the shadows of their inspirations and created their OWN sound, which is amazing. The soppy vocals of the Crusade are gone, and instead they are replaced with a mature sound of a band that FINALLY deserves the hype. If you're not a fan of the band (like me), then try this... you might like it!
Mythology Dripping from Every Riff September 29, 2008 J. Cozens (leigh-on-sea, England) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
From the very first chords of Kirisute Gomen, to very Opeth like title track, every track on this album is dripping some myth or another. With tales of great warriors marching to battle, treachery among the Gods of ancient Greece. This album has many stories to tell. This is a band coming of age, no more personal struggles, just epic tales and soaring hooks. A must for any fan.
Yeeha! September 29, 2008 The Doctor (Ireland) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I can hear the Record Company saying when they first heard 'Shogun' ... "Where's our 'Enter Sandman'? Where's a 'Nothing Else Matters'? I don't hear a radio friendly Metallicesque sing-a-long, arena filling, drive time, million dollar HIT!" And after 'Crusade' that was what I was expecting. But no. As the blistering 'Kirisute Gomen' beats you into a senseless pulp, you soon realize that this is as intense, brutal, diverse, deafening, creative, melodic, heavy, relentless, dynamic and intelligent release you are ever going to hear and one that will win them few fans, but will further support their challenge as contenders for the (new) Kings of Metal. Recorded in Nashville of all places, Shogun is claustrophobic; as each track ends and you are left gasping for breath, the next awesome track such as 'Insurrection' hits you like a tidal wave that carries you out further and further into deep dark waters. Nobody else could get away with an 11 minute title track AND keep you entertained from start to finish. Nope, this is it - the real deal. Trivium have raised the bar and have set everyone one hell of a target to beat. Even the normally pointless 'making of' bonus DVD's is both entertaining and informative. The thing is, it feels as though Trivium have been around for decades, such is the maturity and complexity of Shogun. And that is my only reservation. Where to next? Maybe their country song 'My Dog, My Truck, My Woman'. I hope they play it live!
