Incredibly good - for many tastes too March 11, 2008 Lyn (Melbourne Australia) 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
I'm not an old Take That fan. Being in my 50s my boy band was the Beatles! That just means I've seen a lot of rock-pop over the years and can appreciate a top act when I see one. This concert is just great theatre by anyone's standards. Their material is also maturing and they are recreating themselves in an enduring way. They are doing 'professional naturally sexy and talented individual men' rather than 'boys' now. Gone (almost) are the old cutesy gestures that to my mind look a bit odd on guys of this age (unless you are trying to recreate nostalgia for old fans). I have heard 'Could it be magic' in many incarnations but this version is the ultimate version. This is not only because of the Cirque de Soleil type treatment visually but because it is sung with such feeling (which I dont think this group has even put into it before). So often when performers go for the big show look they do it with plastered theatrical smiles. What Take That offers instead is the poignant and powerful emotionality put into this and all numbers and I see this ultimately as their big strength. Should they get beyond their dancing days this is what should give them longevity as performers. I like the way they are using the group more individually rather than sticking to the boy band formula. There is a lot of individual talent among them and it shows them more as talented in their own individual right beyond any manufacturing. I have even now bought the CD this concert showcases - and they sing even better in the show. 'I'd wait for life' is a new favorite after the show -such feeling! I can't say I did relate to the pole dancing thing as another reviewer. These guys are naturally sexy and dont need this contrived stuff. They also move their largely female audiences with their ability to hit and convey deep and personal emotion. This is beyond cheap sex and I'm not sure whether this is really their fan's fantasy - and I could do without the fire item-I feel nervous about the potential. However these are small quibbles. There must be a comment on the filming too. This should be compulsory viewing for those shooting concerts for DVD. There is a lot of variety with shots chosen that pick the moods and emotional moments. The colour, lighting, staging and set design etc are also truly state of the art: interesting and magic (with one intriguing surrealist coordinating of the real with a projection -you'll have to see it- and the wonderful show-stopping 'Shine' number. What more can I say than a loud applause and if you havent been into this lot before they are well worth the journey.

I got to go twice to see this and it was absolutely fantastic!! The performance of It Only Takes a Minute was brilliant, Howard & Jay pole dancing what more could you want?? The newly re-mixed version of Give Good Feeling was brilliant and for you old-time 'thatters' the part of the crawling during this song from the Hometown tour is dug up and dusted off for an update, you know which part I mean. ;o) Relight my Fire has a new Gnarls Barkley remix which is absolutely fantastic too!! If you've seen the Ultimate tour dvd or any of their old tours on video and think they're fantastic then your sure to enjoy this one too!! I can't wait to relive the magical memories 'Take That' gave me on this tour!! Trust me if you buy this dvd it will NOT disappoint!!! ;o)
Somewhat taken aback March 27, 2008 Herb791 (Somerset) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Look I was never into these people first time around. My wife would go off to their concerts and I'd just not get it. Cheesy hip gyrating c**p - at best. And lets face it - Robbie was the talent wasn't he - just look at Knebworth - isn't that just streets ahead. And then I saw this - having again bought it for my wife. Its really good - but bits of it are a revelation. These guys seems so much more comfortable with themselves. They don't seem like the shadow of RW is over them any more. If the "Ultimate Tour" hologram of Robbie had been repeated it would almost have felt like an intrusion - because this is a "Beautiful World" performance. I love the fact that they do something slightly different with almost everything. Other people have commented on the upbeat tone of "Back for Good" rather than the nauseating cigarette lighter Angels rip off we've seen before. The "slow" version of "Could it be Magic" is breath-taking. Howard is a revelation - his vocals get better and better and unlike Gary Barlow his live voice is better than the studio version - listen to Beautiful World if you don't agree. Even a visibly nervous Jason and "Wooden Boat" suprises - it's just great. So I sign off this review still rather embarassed that I thought this was so great. But forget the cheese of before. This ain't the same. Buy it.
The second best thing April 1, 2008 A. C. Palma (Portugal) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
I was lucky enough to be there the night they filmed this DVD (7th December), but if you were not, this is the second best thing. As a music DVD this is very complete, with the whole show, a long documentary on the production and tour, an audio commentary done by the guys and a photo gallery. As for the show, it is absolutely breathtaking, I haven't stoped watching it since I bought the DVD. A definite MUST not only for Take That fans, but everybody who enjoys great live music and an amazing production.
What a beautiful DVD ! February 25, 2008 J. Hunt (Leeds) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Well, the sound engineers must have read my critisisms of Take That's previous live DVD because this one is nothing short of perfect. The professionalism, talent and incredibly high performance standards of these guys 'Shines' through every song. I have just sat mesmorised for two hours with an inane grin on my face throughout the whole show and have lost count of the number of times I had 'whole body' goosebumps. If anyone was wondering why TT won the best live act Brit award, buy this DVD and find out - you will NOT regret it. Now on to the special features.......
