5 out of 5 stars Music is supposed to be fun   December 29, 2007

If music is supposed to be fun then this album hits the spot. My daughter got it for Christmas and I just had a listen now and had to hear it all the way through. I take serious issue with some of the negative reviews here which I feel are missing the point of this music completely. If you are unable to rise above your dislike for this "genre" you should just not comment on it. I can understand people who prefer to listen to music on an intellectual level giving this a less than excellent review but this is supposed to be fun not modern jazz or Mozart so quit the music snobbery! I hope I myself can stear clear of "genreist" comments and stick to the important thing; does this album get you going? Yes.
I am a piano player in a band myself and find this piano driven good time music absolutely infectious and catchy. Other than this according to "genreists" (of which there are too many!) I should not be qualified to comment as I am a boogie woogie and blues fan and an old fogie too! I have always believed that music should have no barriers to age and if its good you want to join in and dance or tap your foot whatever your status musically.
I found the songs on this album catchy witty and well written with excellent rythmic and melodic structure. It is pathetic to expect something totally original in order to give a good review, perhaps it should be for a 5 star but I am giving it 5 because I enjoyed it too much to quibble about orginality. I have also had the benefit of seeing this band live albeit on my daughter's video and I was not suprised at how well these songs went down with the young audience, having had a similar effect on me. These beguiling and deceptively witty songs are definately a breath of fresh air and I for one am happy that the charismatic and talented Roy Stride has penned these songs because today he made my world a better place!

5 out of 5 stars 2007's Happiest Album   September 23, 2007

This album wont get the most sales, it wont win at the NME awards, the Vodafone live music awards, the MTV European music awards, or the Mercury music prize, but if there was an award for happiest album of the year, this would win hands down.

It kick's off well with Keep On Walking, follwed by hit single She's So Lovely. Possibly the only bad thing about it is that it peaks too early, with track 3 and breakthrough single It's Not About You. The remainder of the album is similar to the opening 3 tracks, with highlights being Heartbeats, Elvis Isn't Dead and closing track "James Bond"

5 out of 5 stars This is a band whose home is the stage   October 23, 2007

Buy this album after seeing them perform live and it'll start to make sense. It'll also put them in the running for Live Act nominations at any awards show worth its reputation. Everyone who listens to radio knows the bopalongatyourdeskto She's So Lovely; the few will know It's Not About You. James Bond and Elvis aint Dead indicate their inspirational icons and are worth more than a few listens.

This debut album is the dressing to the bands true abilities; good music played as it should be.

5 out of 5 stars British Indie Pop at its best   November 1, 2007

I heard the single on the radio and thought this band sounded like a breath of fresh air. They didn't sound like an indie band that takes themselves too seriously or has big pretentions to stardom (as indicated by the clever and witty name of the band). On the strength of the single I bought the album and find that they are just that....a breath of fresh air.

I don't understand people saying they sound like everything else because anyone who knows their indie rock/pop will notice the obvious differences this band brings. For starters, there are very few piano led groups playing music in this indie pop style. The song writing and lyrics may not win mercury prizes as someone observed but it betrays a down to earth songwriter who has no desire to make social or political observations in his songs (al a the Kaiser Chiefs) but its fun and witty. I laughed out loud at some points (the hidden track about Michaela Strachan is pure genius) and has plenty of catchy choruses and sing-a-long lyrics. Scouting For Girls music is just a big bag of fun. The band sound like they are having a real laugh when they write and perform songs and this comes across to the listener. It never fails to bring a smile to my face and I often give it a listen on my daily commute to put me in a good mood in heavy traffic.

As with the person who reviewed below, if you are not a fan of the style of music you are unlikely to like this album. But also, this is nothing like The Kaiser Chiefs or the Fratellis. It is less rock guitars and more piano led pop. I don't like comparing bands as I think all bands are different but if you need some indication Scouting For Girls are a bit like Keane if they were just in a really, really good mood. If you like the singles She's So Lovely and Its Not About You, you will love the album, simple as that. Its all in much the same down to earth, catchy and sing-a-long style and is well worth a listen. Buy it now and when you get it, play it really loud and just have a lot of fun singing along.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the album, not the reviewers   June 6, 2008

This is a good album ,and for me the first track (Keep on walking) is the best song on it. Most of the rest are pretty good. Easily worth the money compared to many other recent releases - including the Hoosiers.
Not sure how or why so many people here have panned it, but to the person who works in HMV... working in HMV doesn't qualify you as a spokeperson for good taste.
