Warning: the Verve’s wittily titled fourth album--the first since their reformation in 2007--is no Urban Hymns Part II. That much is clear from the album’s first single "Love Is Noise," a punchy-yet-addictive propulsive rocker, but it’s a fact underlined several times on the remainder of the album. Taking a determined stroll along the boulevard of experimentalism, the band mix up their slick strings and ringing guitars with dense drums and murky soundscapes for this comeback album. Opening cut “Sit and Wonder” sets the tone: a lurching, bluesy tune with a loose, jam-session feel that maintains its groove for almost seven minutes. The soaring (and shorter) “Rather Be,” the dreamy “Judas” and the plodding “I See Houses” bring us closer to the classic Verve sound, but the retreat into moody psychedelia continues anew with “Numbness,” the intense “Noise Epic” and the kaleidoscopic, Can-like “Colombo”. Despite these darker moments being indulgently drawn-out at times they serve to raise the more euphonious moments--surprise anthems like “Valium Skies” included--to even more heavenly realms, and create a compelling chiaroscuro along the way. --Danny McKenna

Love it !!! Gave me goose bumps, haunting and melodic, moody and moving. Excellent album in my opinion ! Sorry this is brief just buy listen and enjoy.

It will be interesting to see if we get any reviews based on a year or two's listening. I'm not that patient, but I hope somebody will be as it's that kind of album. All kinds of expectations ran ahead of it, and many of the reviews so far are really reactions based on that.
Verve, for me, were always the Verve of the first album: Blue, Butterfly etc: the spaced-out freak-out thing. That makes Forth doubly welcome as far as I'm concerned, a return to what Verve are all about.
I don't recall particular tracks drastically 'standing out' on "A Storm in Heaven" any more than they do on this album. I remember a magazine reviewer in 1993 sprinkling the faintest of praise on "A Storm in Heaven", ending limply: 'Nice one lads!' I wonder if he sees it the same way now.
Forget whatever your expectations were, get into it and write that retrospective review in a couple of years' time. Odds on you'll say the whole album's outstanding.

It's pretty damn good.
And to think that these guys have been away (as The Verve, of course), for over a decade, I think it's time to ask 'where the hell have you been'?
'Forth' took me by surprise. I HAVE read many negative reviews about this album, believe me (including some on here), but reviews mean opinions. Simple as that.
There are some absolute corkers on here, including the rousing 'Love Is Noise' in particular. I understand how it could put some people off with its different vocals (you know what I mean), but this is The Verve, and this is bloody good.
Ten tracks span over 65 minutes and it's fair to say that you get value for money, although some tracks maybe could have been a bit shorter. 'Noise Epic' is the longest track here at 8:14, but each song seems like a jamming session and the musicianship is so tight. Those saying that these guys have lost it are talking complete nonsense - just give it a listen and then voice your opinion.
Just because The Times or The Guardian gave it minus four thousand stars or whatever, it doesn't mean you should automatically listen to them and presume it's going to be rubbish. The proof is in the pudding.
It's not a matter of having to criticise these guys at every opportunity - but obviously some consider it 'cool' to do so. Richard Ashcroft, in particular, bears a lot of the criticism. Yes, his solo works were virtually rubbish (although 'Keys To The World' was ok actually), but it doesn't give a valid reason for criticising him. And yes, he may have a massive ego, but so what? Many frontmen do.
'Forth' is a damn good album, and well worth your time and attention. I mean, ten tracks that remind you of The Stone Roses-era, when jamming tunes were absolute corkers and worshipped around the land far and beyond.
Buy it. It's a brilliant album. 9/10.

Sick Mouthy....have you ever actually listened to Richard Ashcrofts lyrics? Ever? "More rubbish than usual"? Are you absolutely sure? Ashcroft on his day is one of the best lyricists in music....and similarly McCabe in terms of guitar....I was going to write a full reply but actually can't be assed....I just don't see your point mate. If you don't like The Verve fine, but to attack them simply because they have made a comeback is ridiculous. Appalachian Spring is classic Verve, Sit & Wonder is superb, Love Is Noise is one of the best live songs of the year, Noise Epic is pure Come on feel the noise without the sideburns and Valium Skies, Rather Be and I see Houses are absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful.....
Don't listen to this fool! 'Forth' is a great album.....just give it a couple of listens...>I promise its worth it!
