Amazon.co.uk review Australian-born soul starlet Sam Sparro has been making ears prick up of late. His savvy blend of soul, funk and modern electronica nods to 70s and 80s legends like Stevie Wonder and Hall and Oates, but Sparro brings a sassy style and modern production ethic that renders his music 21st Century fresh. Armed with a smooth, mercurial voice, Sparro sashays slickly through disco, funk and soul, moving waists with the punchy electro-funk of "Too Many Questions", "Black & Gold" and "Cut Me Loose", soaring soul like "Hot Mess" and darker material like "Pocket' and the synth-laden "Sick" (which comes over all Calvin Harris admittedly minus the kitsch, ironic appeal). "Clingwrap" is pop-lite Prince, and there's the occasional slower track like "Waiting For Time" and "Cottonmouth", but mostly this is an upbeat collection for good time people. His Daft Punk-meets-Jamiroquai single "Black & Gold" has already earned him deserved comparisons to contemporary blue-eyed soul boys like Jamie Lidell; Sam Sparro is assured enough to make him a star.--Danny McKenna

Disco(mbobulation)Ball April 28, 2008 The Wolf (uk) 20 out of 26 found this review helpful
It takes a brave man (or a somewhat foolish manager) to time ones' debut album release with that of Mrs.Ciccone-Ritchie's latest extravaganza but Mr Sparro gets my vote straight off the bat with this scintillating slice of chic, sophisticated electrofunk. Anybody who can manage to weave the word 'discombobulated' into a pop song (trust me it's there in 'Cottonmouth') immediately gains my full attention and respect. It's a very strong first showing indeed, 'Black And Gold' having been around for a little while now as an amuse-bouche to whet our appetites until the whole three courses (plus petit fours and coffee) arrived at the table. And what a damned fine meal we have set out before us here. It's as though a hyperactive schoolboy has been rooting around in his elder brother's 70's and 80's funky disco collection, absorbing the best and ditching the rest. The retro references are witty, cunningly integrated and sharply performed. (I sense an encyclopedic knowledge and enthusiasm for the genre). Mr Sparro's voice shifts comfortably between a rich (and slightly sleazy) baritone and a finely honed falsetto (watch out Mr Shears !) navigating the thirteen numbers in this collection with confidence and authority. This largely uptempo set would feel as at home in the surburban drawing rooms of Purley as it doubtless will in the darker corners of West Hollywood. Highpoints for the yet-to-be initiated include : aforementioned groovetastic single 'Black And Gold'; '21st Century Life' for it's punch-in-the-guts slap bass; 'Cottonmouth' for it's smart-arse, loping elegance;'Hot Mess' for it's hot hook chorus and personal favorite 'Pocket' which has pretty much everything in it that I want from a pop song. Full Marks Mr Sparro. It's shiny shirt and disco flares for me tonight for sure.... ....and I want to dance with somebody !
It's a grower! May 9, 2008 R.J.R-M (Kent, UK) 14 out of 22 found this review helpful
After hearing and getting addicted to Black and Gold, I was anxiousto see if Sam Sparro's album would live up to my expectations. If you're buying it solely on the basis of Black and Gold, I would be a bit wary, perhaps wait for another single, because there are no other songs in that vein on the album. However, I've really enjoyed the album as a whole. Despite thinking on first listen that some of it was a bit cheesy - indeed some lyrics are but I don't care - I've found it completely addictive and can't stop listening to it. It's sort of like Happy Hour at a gay club, which I mean in an entirely complimentary way! It's so upbeat and fun, perfect for the summer weather which is attempting to shine through. Brilliant for anyone who likes to sing along, too. Anyone who likes the more upbeat songs of Basement Jaxx and Scissor Sisters would probably like this album in all its electro-disco-funk brilliance. Stand out tracks are Sick, Cottonmouth, Clingwrap and Pocket. If for no other reason than this album comes across as unashamedly fun and a bit different to everything in the R n B saturated charts (which I like some of but think there's a bit too much) it deserves five stars.
Hidden Track! July 22, 2008 Maria 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It's a good dance/modern disco album packed with funky dance tracks all the way through the album anyway this album has a hidden track play track 13 can't stop this wait for like 8 minutes and you'll hear still hungry boring track but still but it's a bonus! my favorites on this album are black and gold 21st century life sick hot mess and sally overall i give it a 8/10 must buy if you like black and gold.
I love the music, but the "IN YA FACE" production gets wearing! May 7, 2008 DSR (out beyond the sticks) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The tracks on here show great talent to my tired old ears, each one subtly different from the previous one and no less interesting. I feel that much thought went into the composition, recording and basic mixing of each track and I personally find joy in a modern artist using their style (electrofunk?) so sensitively and with some imagination. For some reason, I hear shades of Depeche Mode on this CD - strange.... So far so good and a worthy five stars for the music alone! However, yet again the music machine has got at the finished CD product and forced the sound volume of each and every track to be FAR TOO LOUD AND IN YOUR FACE!!!!!! I just can't listen to this from one end to the other - it's just too much - every track comes on at the same intense bassy level and there seems to be no light and shade in the "sound" at all, unlike the music, which is desperately begging to be loosened up a little. If I want to hear music sound like this CD, I'll tune in to screaming Radio 1, which is even worse... The Depeche Mode albums I referred to are in a different league in terms of mastering, with real perspective into the mix, something Sam Sparro had too in his mixes at one point I think. I wish the album could be "relaxed" a bit in the mastering, to allow the musically obvious light, shade and "texture" to flow forth more naturally. Even the gentler, moody tracks sound like they're full on "speed" and it's such a shame that the tracks couldn't have been released with their natural dynamics. The sound is worse on the kind of tiny sound systems you buy in Argos too. I hope the music industry wakes up to this sonic butchering before it's too late! Gripe over! The music more than justifies the five stars I've given it RECOMMENDED REGARDLESS!

I picked up this album mainly for the Black & Gold single, this album is brilliant, every track is so good. I keep playing it out again and again and am so pleased I bought it, well recommended.
