Brilliant read. July 29, 2008 Michael J. Law (Teulada Spain) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this book purely on the form of this author's first book, The Island. It does not disappoint. Her grasp of the often muddled and complicated historical facts is a thoughtful and accurate overview of the Spanish Civil War, in particular Franco's ruthless methods, and lack of clemency after the conflict. Victoria leads the reader through what could be a rather heavy drama via a compelling narrative of the fortunes of one Spanish family. Victoria Hislop maintains her high standard, and is no one hit wonder. Excellent book, and a must for lovers of Spain and its culture.
Fantastic read! August 13, 2008 Holly Fyfe (Scotland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I thought this book was wonderful. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a book as much and this one kept me up late every night - I just couldn't put it down. The Spanish Civil War has interested me for a long time, but any material I've read on it has been too complex for me. This story gave a remarkable insight into what every Spanish family must have gone through during that terrible time. To me, the characters were very real and I could feel all their pain; particularly that of Concha (being a mother myself). It was heart-breaking to discover such things happened. At the beginning of the story, I thought it strange that Sonia appeared to know very little about her mother's past. I never quite understood why most Spaniards are reluctant to discuss the civil war and their experiences. However, after reading the book, I understand completely. It must have been terrifying to have lived through that; never quite knowing who to trust. Personally, I liked the way the two stories linked together, and having been to Granada I thought that Ms Hislop described the city as it is today, and the people, just perfectly. It answered a lot of questions for me, and at the same time it told a fascinating tale. I would highly recommend it. I'd love to see a follow-up!!
loved it July 24, 2008 Mrs. Sarah Loftus (UK) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I loved this book it was like a journey and i did not want it to end.
Why would Victoria do this again?..... July 31, 2008 RH (Evesham, UK) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Take a perfectly good historically based story and make it into an unconvincing flashback? I loved "The Island" but it stood on its own as a story about Spinalonga and did not need the link to the modern day bad relationship and family secret. In the same way this wonderful saga of the Spanish civil war does not need to be encompassed in a modern day scenario of "unhappy London girl seeks solace in salsa". In fact, it spoils it. How likely is it that the unhappy London girl would visit Granada and unknowingly go into the very bar which was the home of her Mother? That said, the book had me in tears as I became wrapped up in its revelations. Victoria, please just stick to the story you want to tell next time. You make it come to life and have relevance without obscure modern beginnings and endings.
