Amazon.co.uk Review
You've got to admit that any movie about a teenager whose new next-door neighbor is a 19-year-old former porn star has bona fide cult-movie potential. To its credit, this rather schizoid blend of sleaze and comedy boasts an engaging pair of costars in Emile Hirsch (as the smitten, voyeuristic virgin) and 24's Elisha Cuthbert (as his sexy new house-sitting neighbor). And there are some good laughs in a script that takes unexpected turns when we learn that Cuthbert's character is trying to leave her porn-star past behind, to the chagrin of her pimp-like producer (Timothy Olyphant, in a scene-stealing role). Faring somewhat better than he did with the Rob Schneider non-comedy The Animal, director Luke Greenfield clearly recalls the turbulence that goes hand-in-hand with being young, horny, and confused. There's honesty and even (dare we say it?) maturity to be found in this raging-hormone fantasy, even if it's partially buried in a convoluted plot that's appalling or appealing, depending on your tolerance for good-natured prurience. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A very funny film, well worth the money   August 10, 2004

One word summed up this film for me - Suprising. On the surface of it, you could be excused for thinking that this would be a poorly written american teen comedy relying on its beautiful leading lady Elisha Cuthbert playing a porn star to sell bucket loads of DVDs. While it is true that this has probably happened, those who purchased for this reason along with those who didn't were in for a real treat. The two leading characters (Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert) both play their parts extremely well, with Hirsch convincingly pulling off the role of a studious, sheltered 18 year old whose world is turned upside-down by the arrival of "The Girl Next Door". Elisha Cuthbert is also excellent in her role as former porn star who desperately wants to leave her old life and all the stereotypes that go with it behind (The motel scene a particularly good example of this). The film is very funny, with the jokes well placed and original. The story moves well, you never feel the movie is begining to drag, the addition of Cuthberts former producer Kelly helping this, as he plays his role extremely well, stealing the scene on occasion.

The DVD also comes with a good load of extras, featuring a directors commentary, scene specific commentary from Elisha Cuthbert and Emile Hirsch, Gag reel, Deleted scenes and more.

In summary, this movie really was a very pleasant suprise. Not the sell out that could possibly have been expected, but a very good film about coming of age, tasting life and of course, getting the girl. Excellent performances from all parties, a great soundtrack with songs very well used, and above all very funny well placed jokes make this a very appealing package. This comes highly recommended.

This film is a great teen movie, which is funny in parts throughout. It sends across the opposite message as the first reviewer states. It's not promoting pornstars at all, if anything it's showing the audience how bad the life of a pornstar can be. The feature is classified 15 so the audience it's targeting are at least at that age when they start thinking about issues of sex.
I actually found the film very amusing and so did everyone I know that has seen it. There are some great one-liners and it tackles this very 'taboo' subject in a mature way. Well just buy it, the film made me laugh anyway. Plus the leading lady is very good looking.

5 out of 5 stars Elisha Cuthberts Number 1 Fan   September 18, 2005

When I saw the trailer of this film on TV I thought it was just another boring romantic chick flick, I couldn't have been more wrong. To be honest its hard to sum up this film in words, but i'll try.

This is the best teen movie ever because it is so unlike any other teen movie thats been made. Lads if your thinking about watching this film I suggest you don't watch it with your girlfriends, for one reason, Elisha Cuthbert. If you havn't heard of Elisha Cuthbert before or you don't think she's stunning, watch The Girl Next Door and afterwards you won't be able to stop thinking about her.

The Director Luke Greenfield said that if he couldn't get Emile Hirsche to play the part of Mathew he probably wouldn't have made the film. He plays the role perfectly and his and Elisha Cuthbert's on-screen chemistry is amazing. Elisha Cuthbert is not just beautiful she is also a very talented actress, look out for her other films Old School and House of Wax.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a teen comedy. It's much more than that!   January 15, 2006

I don't like the way this movie was marketed as a teen comedy. YES it has the jocks and the losers but I wouldn't class this as a teen comedy at all. It's so much deeper and really much more of a love story / adventure because that's what happens.

The first 1/4 is pretty much your average Teen comedy and was mostly what you saw in the trailers. Hard working kid with no time for fun meets hot girl next door who just happen's to be a porn star with his loser mates talking about "banging" hot chicks and not getting any. Thats the plot overall but that doesn't make an enjoyable movie in my eyes. In fact I only watched this when a friend had it on DVD and let me borrow it. I didn't exactly go out my way to watch this. Now it's one of my favourite films.

This is because of where the film takes you and how much you can relate to what's happening. How many of you have felt your working to hard when you're young and not having much fun? How many of you have seen the perfect girl and wanted her so bad you'd do the craziest stuff? Half the "stuff" that happens through the film (especially the ending) you wouldn't have predicted from watching the first 1/4 and I want to tell you all the "stuff" but that would really spoil the first viewing (there will be more).

The film is almost perfectly made, the kids are all excellent and the two stars have sparks practically flying off them when they are together. The music is spot on and the twists and turns will take your emotions on a roller-coaster ride.

This film is perfect for watching alone, with friends or with your girlfriend because its "feel-good", "funny" and really "deep" and really deserves better credit as it's more than just an above average teen comedy. It fully deserves your attention.

Also: The extras on this dvd are really good quality. Theres more than just the usual trailers and making of. Unlike most films they add to the next veiwing as well as making your experience more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars I will always remember.....   January 7, 2007

In a world where it appears everyone approaches film with the seriousness of a stuffy Newsnight reviewer, 'The Girl Next Door' has for me provided the perfect antidote, after all, film, particular in this genre should entertain and leave a feel good factor long after the ending credits.

First and foremost this film has a superb soundtrack, not fully replicated in its 'Official Soundtrack CD' release, beginning with Queen and Bowie, through Elliott Smith, Echo and the Bunnymen, Thunderclap Newman, The Verve and finishing with the appropriate and addictive Baba O' Riley by The Who. The music rather than being an add on to the film, feels fully integrated as the rollercoaster of emotions throughout the film unfold.

Regarding the film itself, honestly this is the only film I have watched, then felt an immediate desire to buy the DVD, it provides a feel good factor that is rare nowadays, far from being a sleezy affair that its marketing may suggest the film has romance and comedy in spades.

Cuthbert plays her role beautifully, portraying the role of Danielle, not as a 2 dimensional 'whore' but as a rounded character that the audience genuinely want to succeed, add to this that she is quite simply stunningly beautiful and it is obvious why Cuthbert is so in-demand in Hollywood 3 years after the release of this film. This is not to ignore her co-star Hirsch though, who plays a geek, but one who seems to have something about him with a likeability that completes this film, add Timothy Olyphant in a ruthless yet warm and amusing role and this film will certainly entertain you, leave you with a feel good factor and as The Who scream about Teenage Wasteland the sense that 'the juice was certainly worth the squeeze'!

I will always remember 'The Girl Next Door'.
