The Grandaddy Of Them All!!!! August 13, 2008 Mr. J. L. Dempsey (Bham Engalnd) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Wrestlemania 24 ( Orlando Florida Citrus Bowl ) Match 1 - JBL -VS- FINLAY (Belfast Brawl) A very solid opening match full of high impact spots, The thing you must realise about these two "superstars" is that they have known each other for many a year, even before there WWE days so they have a fine understanding of how each other works and how far they can push it, Finlay hits a spectacular Undertakeresque dive through the ropes and takes some big bumps and hard hitting shots to the head. Wrong man won in my eyes. Match 2 - JOHN MORRISON VS CARLITO VS MR KENNEDY VS MVP VS CM PUNK VS SHELTON BENJAMIN VS Y2J - (MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH) One awesome match, the greatest MITB i've ever seen, i was watching this live and just had no idea at all who would win it, its a shock who won it but all you real wrestling fans out there will now know. This is a car crash of a match with some really dangerous spots and massive bumps, The only words i can think to describe this match is ENJOYABLE VIEWING!! Without Y2J we would never had this match type so thanks go to Jericho. Match 3 - BATISTA - VS - UMAGA (Battle For Brand Supremecy) Another solid match, but then again Umaga is always a pleasure to watch as he is one of the most competent performers on the roster. I wouldnt say he carries Batista in this match as Dave doesnt need a helping hand anymore but he certainly helps him out alot, Batista botches the finish but still a decent matchup. Match 4 - KANE - VS - CHAVO GUERRERO (ECW CHAMPIONSHIP) I wish i could echo my comments on this match with the review of the last match but I just cant, shock beginning middle and end, saying that the match is 12 seconds long so that may tell you alot!!! Match 5 - SHAWN MICHEALS - VS - RIC FLAIR (Career Ending Match) Honestly....and i'm not just saying this for nostalgic reasons but this was the MOST emotional match up i've ever watched, HBK shows to the world that he is still the showstopper and will forever be Mr Wrestlemania. Flair asked for the best of Shawn Micheals here and thats exactly what he got. Two massive moonsaults from the top rope to the outside, the first resulting in instant broken ribs for HBK which he is still recuperating from to this day. The ending is a tear jerker and will go down as one of the most memorable matches in all of wrestling history. Match 6 - PLAYBOY BUNNYMANIA LUMBERJACK MATCH Melina hits some funky looking moves in this match but the lights go out and its just one of those matches that allows the fans to get some popcorn and a coke before the impending main events. Match 7 - TRIPLE H -VS- JOHN CENA -VS- RANDY ORTON (TRIPLE THREAT WWE CHAMPIONSHIP) A good but not amazing main event, Orton shows his quality here, No one expected the winner of this match to win and it was a shock ending, some brilliant innovative movesets in this match that you'll never have seen before in any match, Cena and The Games entrances are awesome on this as well, with HHH finally get some pyro on his. I'd give this an 8/10 for a wrestlemania main event. Match 8 - BIG SHOW -VS- FLOYD MONEY MAYWEATHER (BIGGEST ATHELTE IN THE WORLD VS THE BEST ATHELTE IN THE WORLD) NO DQ!! The majority of fans felt this would flop but Big Show showed why he has such potential and why Flair believes he is the best big man to ever be in the business, Show carries this and it's highly entertaining stuff, really old school Kayfabe story that was executed perfectly. The ending is very worth while and legit. Match 9 - UNDERTAKER - VS - EDGE (WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP) These two have had endless matches this year and will probably win Feud of the year im sure of that, When your hAve Undertaker and Edge in a main event you know your in for a treat, this is simple a brilliant wrestling match, 10/10 for reversals, near falls and big bumps, a shock ending and a truelly great finishing shot to close wrestlemania. If you want a classic match between these two watch this and one night stand 08. I'D GIVE WRESTLEMANIA 24 9/10.
IMPROVES EVERY YEAR............................. July 21, 2008 L. Hay (Scotland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I will not give a match by match account of this great event as this has been well enough documented as it is, but it was a truly enjoyable spectacle. However, I must comment on the match between nature Boy Ric Flair and HBK Shawn Michaels. This was a truly outstanding match and Naitch showed his true colours and gave the best performance I have ever seen from him as a lifelong fan. Extras include a Battle Royal which preceded the PPV; and of course the Hall of Fame ceremony. The Rock went over the top for my money, taking around an hour and a half to induct his father and grandfather, with a contribution from his mother. The star of the inductees was Ric Flair, introduced by my favourite, the one and only Triple H. All in all this DVD extends to well over 8 hours and I have to admit watching it twice in succession. A truly great event. (There was some sort of accident with the fireworks at the end on the Undertaker's departure, but that was not included. Pity!) BUY IT, RENT IT, BORROW IT, BUT SEE IT!!
the mania of wrestlemania July 28, 2008 James Klonowski 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
the stadium is huge which makes it even more special. m.i.t.b. should have kicked the night off instead of the worthless belfast brawl. match of the night was hbk vs ric flair i love the soundtrack to the build up. the worst match in possibly wrestlemania history was batista vs umaga skip this one. the triple threat match was very exiting and should have been the main event triple h should have won here instead of a month later at backlash. the light go out halfway through but it is quickly fixed. the mayweather and big show match is good you'll be shocked how much punishment mayweather reccieves. taker and edge was the main event even though it was good it deserved to be mid card at best. hall of fame was quite bad this year minus the rock returning and ric flair getting inducted roll on austin and rock getting inducted. only a battle royal is the extra should have been lot more none the less a great wreslemania but the best one in my view is still seventeen.
Best mania ever? July 30, 2008 mikky silk (wales) This wrestlemania was a true classic and for my money was up with Mania's 3 and 15 as the best ever. This had stacks of Unforgettable moments and original moves. 1st match: Finlay (w Hornswoggle) vs JBL Great hardcore match that far surpasses what you would expect from these two. Hornswoggle even played his part in this one by adding to the tension. 8.5/10 2nd match: MITB ladder match This was possibly the best ladder match ever and definetely the best money in the bank match. Shelton again was the star of the match but everyone helped make this a 10/10 3rd match: Batista vs Umaga A big step-down from batista's last mania match, still worth a watch but maybe not more than twice. I quite liked the ending because it seemed to follow up what had happened in the match. 5/10 4th match: Chavo guerrero vs Kane An extremely quick match which brings back memories of Bob Backlund vs diesel. Does its job well. 6/10 5th match: Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels Wrestlemania picks up again as This match is a classic. Great storyline+ Great Wrestlers + Great ending= great match. The match really doesn't dissapoint in any way and has a very emotional ending. 10/10 6th match: Beth Phoenix and Melina (w Santino Marella)vs Maria and Ashley Probably the worst match on the card for wrestling but Santino Marella, Jerry Lawler and Snoop Dogg add a lot of entertainment to this. 6/10 7th match HHH vs John Cena vs Randy Orton This was better than Cena vs HHH at mania 22 and was a very good match, I'm glad this wasn't at the top of the card though because it wasn't a 5 star match. 8/10 8th match: Big show vs Floyd "money" Mayweather This match starts off slow but it starts to pick up and by the end you've got a Brilliant match, no-one was really looking forward to this match because it should've been a train wreck, but it turns out a to be a nice surprise. 9/10 9th match Taker vs Edge Will Undertakers streak end, Will edge's opportunistic way of defending his title land him in hot water with the deadman, all of these questions are answered in a phenomenal main event. 10/10 A must buy mania
An excellent edition of WrestleMania. Truly fantastic July 12, 2008 R. Wood 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
WrestleMania 24 pretty much has it all this year. The fantastic outdoor venue (the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida), large crowd, strong undercard, classic main event and celebrity involvement resulting in a truly fun-filled extravaganza that doesn't disappoint. While it isn't the best WrestleMania of them all, it's still a fantastic show that has the essentials we've come to expect from the biggest wrestling show of the year. Belfast Brawl Finlay vs. JBL The whole `Hornswoggle is Mr. McMahon's son. No, he's actually Finlay's son' storyline was poorly devised and dragged on for far too long. So it's pleasing that it finally gets resolved here in this opening contest, which is a fine one at that. Both guys are in their element here and produce a nice, well-executed hardcore bout that's given the right amount of time. Not particularly memorable or as intense as it could've been, but it's a good start to the show, and Hornswoggle's role enhances the quality. I like it. (7/10) Money in the Bank Ladder Match Chris Jericho vs. Shelton Benjamin vs. John Morrison vs. Carlito vs. CM Punk vs. MVP vs. Mr Kennedy The more I see Ladder Matches, the harder it becomes for there to be originality. The participants obviously laugh at that theory, as they all produce an absolutely awesome stunt-filled melee with outstanding, original innovation that I've never seen before. The MITB contest at WrestleMania 21 is still the best, but this is a very close second. Watch out for a surprise return and a truly worthy winner. (9/10) Battle for Brand Supremacy Batista vs. Umaga This could've been a really intense, fantastically good slugfest...but it's not. The lack of a proper build-up, coupled with Batista's sloppy performance, a botched-finish and the wrong guy winning, results in an average bout that's rather forgettable. Still, Umaga shines here, giving a great performance which deserves rewarding at some stage. The `Uu-uu-uu-maga!" chants are brilliant. (5/10) ECW Championship Match Chavo Guerrero (Champion) vs. Kane Finally Kane is given a push that he deserves. A second world title reign for the Big Red Machine was LONG overdue and Chavo (as good as he is) did NOTHING with the ECW title. I can't be too generous, though, as this is essentially a squash that lasts nine seconds. Short, sweet and sensibly done...but a squash is a squash. (3/10) Career Threatening Match Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels Ric Flair...thank you. For giving us over thirty-five years of perhaps the most wonderful career of any wrestling legend. If this was gonna be the Nature Boy's last hurrah, the only logical place and opponent would be WrestleMania and Shawn Michaels. An excellent storyline is made even better here thanks to Shawn bringing Ric to the very best of what's left, and Flair himself determined not to let his opponent and fans down. A truly emotional swansong and beautiful wrestling contest. Shawn's selfless act at the end and the poignant aftermath are equally timeless. Worthy match of the year candidate. (9/10) Playboy Bunnymania Lumberjack Match Maria & Ashley vs. Beth Phoenix & Melina As Trish Stratus has said...there IS a place for stuff like this in wrestling. But quality women's wrestling (e.g. Trish and Lita among others) seems to be taking a backseat to this STUFF lately (especially at WrestleMania) which is disappointing, frankly. Nonetheless, Beth and Melina carry their opponents to an okay bout. It's pretty much filler, which we needed in order to recover from the previous match. Sloppiness and the lights temporarily going out spoil this, but Santino and Snoop Dogg's involvement makes for fun viewing. (5/10) WWE Championship Triple Threat Match Randy Orton (Champion) vs. John Cena vs. Triple H A match that had very good build-up and benefits from all the participants having great storyline history with one another. With so many variables going for this, what you have here is a great triple-threat outing from all three participants. Not the classic it could've been, but still a fun, non-stop affair with a surprising outcome. Worthy of WrestleMania. (8/10) The Biggest vs. The Best Big Show vs. Floyd "Money" Mayweather I was initially unsure whether or not this was such a good idea for WrestleMania. There is a world of difference between wrestling and boxing and bringing them together doesn't guarantee that it'll work. However, this can definitely be called a success. Superb booking and presentation makes this a very realistic and believable contest. It's a bout that makes both the Big Show and Mayweather look so credible and pays equal respect to wrestling and boxing. A fight both athletes can be very proud of, and one we can all really enjoy. (8/10) World Heavyweight Championship Match Edge (Champion) vs. The Undertaker Finally, after so many months of Edge being the godlike heel, screwing over Taker and escaping judgement again and again, we finally have their long-awaited, highly-anticipated confrontation. And it was worth the wait. With Edge playing the heel so well, it seemed like the Dead Man's WrestleMania winning streak would be in serious jeopardy, more so than it had been in previous years. It's perhaps the best one-on-one, straight wrestling match that either individual has ever had in their careers, complete with so many counters, excellent pacing and false finishes that will have you hooked. And the ending...well, see for yourself. As a WrestleMania main-event, it's excellent. Match of the night. (10/10) Extras are sorely lacking here when compared to previous WrestleMania 3-disc sets. There's only the entire Hall of Fame Ceremony and the pre-WrestleMania Battle Royal. While they're both great to see, interviews, segments and build-up to the show usually fill these DVD releases to bursting point, and it doesn't happen here which is a bit of a letdown. Nonetheless, it's WrestleMania, the biggest wrestling event of the year, and the twenty-fourth incarnation, like the ones before it, is a truly amazing spectacle. Without question, it's worth buying.
