Amazon.co.uk Review In spite of the quality of the more recent Keira Knightley-starring big-screen interpretation, it's the mid-90s BBC mini-series of Pride and Prejudice that's still regarding by many as the definitive telling of Jane Austen's classic. Featuring, as many swooning admirers will already know, Colin Firth in a career-topping performance as Mr Darcy, Pride and Prejudice is the timeless tale of seemingly impossible romance. On one hand, there's the wealthy, single Mr Darcy, and on the other is Elizabeth, a woman Darcy believes is beneath him. Across six sumptuous hours of this classic mini-series, their story then slowly bubbles, aided by some excellent supporting performances. Nods must go to the likes of Jennifer Ehle, Susannah Harker, Anna Chancellor and Julia Sawalha, to highlight but a handful. It's not just in front of the camera where Pride and Prejudice scores, though. The production values are absolutely outstanding, with this really a watermark for BBC costume drama production. Add in Simon Langton's diligent direction, and this is one of those rare occasions where everything seemingly effortlessly falls into place, with outstanding end results. Over ten years since it was first broadcast, the particular take on Pride and Prejudice remains as vital, moving and compelling as it was first time round. And if it's ever topped, it's going to take something really, really special to do it

An absolute classic. Fantastic! June 30, 2006 CC (England) 82 out of 83 found this review helpful
This is an absolutely fantastic adaptation of a truly classic novel. Jennifer Ehle as Lizzie is wonderful in her performance as the independant, intelligent Bennet sister who will not marry for anything less than love. All the characters were brought to life in this adaptation and this is FAR superior to anything before or after it! Namely the very flashy, confusing version starring Keira Knightly. This, in my opinion was just an excuse to cash in on a very successful novel. No one can match Mrs Bennet, Lizzie, Jane, the bungling Mr Bingley and his poe-faced sisters. And absolutely NO ONE can take the place of or replace Colin Firth as the proud heart stoppingly gorgeous Mr Darcy. I have seen this series over a hundred times (no exaggeration) and have not tired of it and i know that i never will. On a rainy Sunday afternoon and a sunny Wednesday afternoon alike, this series is always a welcome distraction to life and everything that comes with it. A special mention must be made of Mr Collins. He is so totally cringe worthy it makes me laugh. The actor who played him did an award winning job of bringing the character to life. THIS is the only version of Pride and Prejudice anyone should own.
TV Classic June 2, 2006 Jack Keane (Ireland) 29 out of 29 found this review helpful
Of all the Jane Austen adaptations this is the greatest. And that's including cinema's most wonderful adaptation - Sense and Sensibility. Her character based plots demand mini-series length plots to truly flourish and that's what allows this work to blossom. It has room to breathe. It also helps that the creators have been so careful in the set construction, costumes, writing, direction and most importantly in any Austen adaptation, its casting. There really isn't an error in the casting here. Mrs Bennett is suitably screeching. Her husband, nicely unsentimental. The pick of the support is Mr. Collins. He can come across as an unsufferably twee monster on the page, but in this adaptation he is played as the perfect fool. It's a wonderfully droll performance. And of course our hero and heroine are uniformly excellent. This is a stately production; of the kind only the BBC can really make with such veneer. Any lover of acting, or literate writing would be silly not to add it to their collection.
Fantastic & very acurate to original novel February 18, 2006 36 out of 37 found this review helpful
I first watched this version as a series on BBC TV and bought it first on video and then upgraded recently to the DVD. The BBC created the difinitive version with this production with both Jennifer Earle & Colin Firth excelling in their roles. Benjamin Whitrow is also fantastic as Mr Bennett. The production is quite true to the Jane Austin novel and I have watched it an incredible amount of times. (The only comment that I have relating to the format if you are changing from the video version, which plays straight through, the DVD is seperated into the episodes of the original series).
FANTASTIC! December 15, 2006 Devil girl (Hell) 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
It is about a thousand times better than the remake. The characters are so much more charismatic and the story line is more developed. Although it is long, it is worth every penny...
Brilliantly cast and true rendition of P & P April 6, 2006 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
One of the most striking things about this film is that it makes an honest effort to maintain the integrity of Jane Austen's novel. Several other versions of this movie have attempted to tell the story in something like two hours and many of the events lose their historical and social significance; kudos to the BBC for exercising some quality control in this respect. Also, this film is brilliantly cast. Jennifer Ehle is stunning and her wit and classical training come through on screen. Her expressive eyes are telling and express emotion without the necessity of dialogue. Colin Firth is also fabulous. He embodies what Darcy is and personifies the moody, sullen, English gentleman in his portrayal. I recommend this film to anyone looking for an accurate film of Pride and Prejudice. I am literature graduate student and can't even criticize it much for academic reasons. What few liberties have been taken don't do anything to damage the quality of this film at all.
